3 Steps to Making Firework Stars at Home

Firework stars are small, dense pellets of pyrotechnic chemical mixtures that serve as the fundamental light-producing elements within a firework shell. When a rocket reaches its peak altitude and its burst charge ignites, these packed cylinders or balls are scattered across the sky, burning brilliantly to create the vibrant colors, twinkling effects, and trailing sparks of a fireworks display. Their chemical composition dictates the visual outcome: specific metallic salts are added to generate distinct hues, such as copper for blue or strontium for red, while the physical size and layered shape of the star determine how long the trail burns and whether it changes color mid-flight. In this instructable I will be showing you how to safely make firework stars and give them color.

Paper Cup

Black Powder (click here to learn how to make it)

Optional: Coloring Agent (any very fine powdered metal)

Peppercorn Seed or any Round Seed

Water

To create the stars, pour a spoonful of blackpowder into the paper cup. Next soak the seeds (I use peppercorn) under water briefly. Place the wet seeds in the cup with the black powder. Now just rotate the cup slowly alowing the seeds to collect the blackpowder. once the stars are about twice the size of the seed you started with, you can proceed to the next step.

You do not have to add a coloring agent. The black powder will already burn a beautiful orange color. If you want to add color, find an extremely fine powdered metal and add a small spoonful to the cup with the blackpowder. Once this is done, do the same rolling motion as you did with the cup in step one. The stars should start to gather up the coloring agent. Once the stars will not pick up any more coloring agent then you can move to the next step.

Let the stars air dry for about one whole day until the inside is completely dry. Now you have made your blackpowder stars. Be gentle when handling them and follow your state laws.
