3D Printing Black Myth Wukong
In this article, I'll walk you through how I got a detailed 3D model of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from the video game Black Myth, printed and customized using SLA (Stereolithography) 3D printing.
I worked with Unionfab, a 3D printing company, to bring the model to life with two different finishes. One features a shiny metal-like surface with standard resin and painting, while the other uses translucent resin with an unpolished finish.
Supplies
You Need:
- A 3D model of Sun Wukong (I got it from this article)
- SLA 3D printer (or access to a 3D printing service like Unionfab)
- Resin (standard and translucent)
Download or Design Your Wukong Model
You can find the Wukong model from the game Black Myth on various 3D model repositories like Thingiverse or MyMiniFactory. Alternatively, you can design your own in CAD software.
Make sure the model is in a printable format (STL, OBJ).
Choose Your Resin Type
Decide which type of finish you want for your model. For a shiny, metal-like surface, standard resin is ideal. For a more translucent, natural look, translucent resin works best.
Send the Model to Unionfab for Printing
Once you've finalized your model, you can send it to Unionfab, a 3D printing company, to get your model printed using SLA (Stereolithography) technology.
SLA printing is great for high-detail models like Wukong due to its precision. Make sure to specify if you want a finish.
Unionfab will print two versions of Sun Wukong for you:
- Standard Resin + Painting: This version will have a metal-like surface and a glossy finish, perfect for a sleek, shiny aesthetic. Unionfab will also paint it for added realism.
- Translucent Resin (Unpolished): This version will use translucent resin with a natural unpolished surface. (The translucent version may look great on its own, but you can also apply a clear coat to protect it if desired.)
Results & Lessons Learned
The choice of material and finishing greatly impacts the final look and feel of the model. SLA printing is fantastic for detailed models, especially when showcasing intricate designs like Sun Wukong's armor and staff. If you’re looking to bring your favorite characters or designs to life, I highly recommend exploring SLA 3D printing.
