Ever wondered how to turn a simple piece of wood into a stunning piece of rustic art? This project uses just a few basic tools—nails, string, a hammer, and a little creativity—to create beautiful bird figures perched on branches, all mounted on a wooden log. This DIY is perfect for those who love blending natural textures with hand-crafted charm. Let's bring life to wood with just string and imagination!

Supplies

  1. A flat wood log
  2. Nails
  3. Hammer
  4. Colored strings (for birds and branches)
  5. White paper (for sketching the design)
  6. Pencil and Marker
  7. Tape (or holding the sketch in place)

  1. Use a clean white paper (depending on your wood log size).
  2. Place the paper on your wood log.
  3. Use tape to hold the paper firmly onto the wood surface.
  4. Make sure the size fits well within the log area.
  5. Sketch simple bird shapes
  6. Make sure the size fits well within the log area.

Hammer the Nails Through the Outline of the Birds and Branches

  1. Begin hammering from the bird’s beak or tail—whichever feels easier.
  2. Use a small hammer and hold the nail straight.
  3. Avoid placing them too close or too far.
  4. Once the outline is complete, visually inspect to ensure the shape of the bird is clearly defined with nails.
  5. Carefully tear away the white paper template, leaving the nails embedded in the wood.

Start Wrapping the String

  1. Select a color that stands out against the wood.
  2. Pick any one nail as your starting point (usually at the base of the bird or tail).
  3. Tie a secure double knot around that nail and trim the excess thread.
  4. First, loop the string once around each nail, moving along the entire bird outline.
  5. This gives the bird a clear edge and base for filling.
  6. Use more layers at the body and slightly fewer on the tail or wings to add depth.

Draw Grass and Hammer the Nails

VID20250603133249.00_08_12_05.Still041.jpg
  1. Decide where the grass will go—typically at the bottom of the wood log, below the bird and branches.
  2. Keep the design natural and slightly uneven to mimic real grass.
  3. Extend the grass tips to various heights while keeping the bottom aligned so the grass grows “from” the base.
  4. Gently hammer a nail into each marked point.
  5. Once all nails are in place, remove the paper and you’re ready to start wrapping threads.

Start Stringing the Grass

  1. Wrap the string once along the outline of each grass blade—from base to tip and back down.
  2. This forms a clean edge for each blade of grass.
  3. Zigzag the thread between the left and right side of each blade, moving up and down.
  4. Make sure all knots are tight and string tension is even.
