A T-shirt Bag!!

IMG_20250830_130805.jpg

Hello! My name is Rayley, and this is my first Instructable EVER!! I'm so excited!

I discovered this bag idea a long time ago. I love making bags to share with my fellow humans! Then, I discovered Instructables and thought "the t-shirt bag would be perfect for this!" So, here I am!! T-shirt bags are bags that you can literally make out of a t-shirt! It's in the name! They are a fun way to fill a rainy day, which, is what today is over here! The bags are simple, yet they can be sophisticated if you make them right. I can't wait to get started!

Please note that this is my first Instructable and its a rainy day, so my pics aren't that great! I'm sorry! But a lot of my friends love these bags, so it's the end product that counts, right?!

Supplies

You Need:

  1. an old t-shirt
  2. scissors
  3. a flat surface
  4. 10 min.

Choose a Shirt!

Before we start, we need to choose a shirt! I would suggest an old shirt that doesn't fit, since you wouldn't wear it anymore, and a cute shirt! I choose this old cheer shirt because, even if it fits, I don't wear it anymore! Now, go choose a shirt!

"Sleeve Surgery!"

Now that you have chosen a shirt, we can officially get started! It's time to become a "shirt surgeon!" The very first thing you need to do is lay your shirt out flat on the smooth surface! Now, you need to cut off the sleeves with the scissors. Yep! You heard me right! If you look at your shirt, you'll see a seam. (Look at the first picture!) As you can see, the pic is a little close up! Sorry! Anyway, look at the dotted line I put on the 1st picture! That is about where you need to cut. If you look at pic #2, you'll see the finished cut sleeve. Cut, then repeat on the other side!

Neckline Time!

Now we need to create the swoop of the bag! If you look at the 1st pic above, you'll see the dotted line where you normally cut. But every shirt is different, and you can make the swoop tiny, or large! Look at the 2nd pic to see the finished product for this step! Then cut your neckline!

Just Read This...

I just wanted to take a break to explain what you have done so far will make a bag. If you look at the pic above you will see the bag and some VERY bad handwriting (sorry, y'all! using the touchpad on the computer is hard!!!) That pic basically explains everything though! If your bag looks like that right now, only with your shirt, you are ready to move on!

Creating Frays

We are nearly done! Right now we need to prepare for connecting the bottom pieces, so we need to cut strips of fabric about 2.5 to 3 inch up the BOTTOM of the shirt. -IMPORTANT: CUT THROUGH BOTH LAYERS OF FABRIC!!!- The first pic will basically tell you how to hold your scissors and shirt to cut. (*look at 1st pic*) In the first pic, I am holding both "layers" of the shirt, like in the 2nd pic. Now, we need to cut frays about 1 inch apart all across the length of the shirt, about 2.5 to 3 inches long. See the 3rd pic for the finished frays, then do it yourself!

Oh, I forgot! At the end of both the ends of these shirt, you should notice that the ends are wider than the other slits. You just need to cut a slip up each of the ends..

Knotting & Finishing!

IMG_20250830_125713.jpg

First, you need to turn the bag/shirt inside out!!! That is SO important!

Then, just find the frays across from each other and start knotting them together. You can do however many knotss you want, but I recommend at least 2 or 3. Look at pic #1 for this step after you do it! After you do the 1 or 2 knots do an extra knot or two at the ends. Now you can either stop here, if you think its sturdy enough, or you can add some extra sturdiness! Whichever you choose! If your opting for stopping here, just read the next step. Or if you want to make it more sturdy, take one of the frays, tie it to the one DIAGANL from it, then do that all the way down, I'm not including a pic because its better for you to find your own method to make it extra sturdy.

Wearing & Using Your New Bag!

Congrats! You're done! Now you can wear your new bag wherever you want! Tell your friends and fam about it and help them make one!
