Automotive Piston Rod Bottle Opener

This is a bottle opener made from an old automotive piston connecting rod.

Supplies

This began with an old piston rod. I believe it is from a Chevy 291.

Mark Where You Want to Cut.

First I used a small cutoff wheel on a Dremel to mark the area of the piston rod that I wanted to remove.

Clamp and Cut

The piston rod was clamped down to a work bench. The marked area was cut away with an angle grinder. Remember to please wear eye, ear and respiratory protection when cutting.

Notch the Bottom Cut

The angle grinder was then used to narrow or notch the metal at the bottom cut. It needs to be thin enough to fit under the bottle cap.

Add a Self Centering Groove

I then used a Dremel with a sanding drum to carve a groove in the bottom cut. This helps center the opener on the bottle.

Test Fitting

Test fitting the opener on the bottle. A little more grinding may be needed.

Clean and Seal

I then de-greased the opener and sealed it with semigloss clear spray enamel. This improves the look and keeps the cut areas from rusting.
