Backyard Garden Pond- You Can Do It!

Our backyard septic system was an unsightly mess! Decided to camouflage it with a flower garden and pond.

Purchased pond liner- sized for your space

Large rocks to edge the pond were sourced locally along roadsides

Clear your area of any large rocks and roots and level the ground as much as possible. Dig out the shape you want for your pond. Mine has a little ‘creek’ area.

Position your pond liner into the area you’ve cleared for the pond and creek bed. Start filling with water which will help the liner settle along the base and sides. Lay some larger rocks along the top edge to keep your liner in place.

Continue to edge the pond with large rocks and trim your liner.

Continue to fill the pond. Add your pump to the deeper end of the pond. Dig a small ditch for the electric cord and outside extension cord to the GFI electric box. The cord should be covered with dirt and a waterproof cord cover placed at the junction of the pump cord and extension cord. Lay out your pump hose along the length of the ‘creek’ area and bury it with the discharge end at the far end of the creek. This area is where you can form a little water fall for the water to return to the pond.

Continue to arrange large rocks along the edges of the pond to form the sides and camouflage the liner. I added riverbed stone along the edge of the large rocks. Added mulch and lots and lots of flowers along with a couple of benches and fish! Relax and enjoy!
