Balloon Shot
The Balloon Shot Game is a fun and interactive game designed using Scratch. In this game, the player controls a shooter and tries to pop the balloons appearing on the screen. Whenever the player successfully hits a balloon, the score increases.
The game helps students learn basic programming concepts such as events, loops, variables, conditions, coordinates, and sprite interactions. It also encourages creativity and problem-solving skills by allowing students to design their own characters, backgrounds, and game levels.
This project is a simple way for beginners to understand how coding can be used to create an engaging and interactive game.
Supplies
- Pictoblox Software: Download PictoBlox | Windows, MacOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android & iOS
- Laptop/PC
- Speaker or Headphones
Step by Step Block Code Guide
Step 1: Balloon Movement Script
This script controls the balloon's continuous movement and checks the game conditions.
1. Start the game
Block: when green flag clicked
- The script starts when the player clicks the Green Flag.
- This begins the balloon movement.
2. Move the balloon continuously
Block: forever
- The blocks inside this loop run continuously throughout the game.
3. Move the balloon
Block: move (Speed) steps
- The balloon moves forward by the value stored in the Speed variable.
- As the Speed increases, the balloon moves faster.
4. Check if the balloon goes off-screen
Block: if <x position > 240> then
- This checks whether the balloon has moved beyond the right edge of the stage.
- If its x position is greater than 240, it is considered a missed shot.
5. Return the balloon to the starting position
Block: broadcast [Move to initial position]
- A message is sent to move the balloon back to its starting position.
- This allows the game to continue with another balloon.
6. Increase missed shots
Block: change [missed shots] by 1
- Every time the balloon reaches the edge without being clicked, the missed shots variable increases by 1.
7. Check for three missed shots
Block: if <missed shots = 3> then
- The game checks whether the player has missed 3 balloons.
8. Display Game Over
Blocks:
- switch backdrop to [Stars]
- stop [all]
- When the player misses 3 balloons, the background changes to the Stars backdrop.
- The game then stops completely.
9. Check the score
Block: if <Score = 5> then
- The game checks whether the player has successfully popped 5 balloons.
10. Display the winning screen
Blocks:
- hide
- switch backdrop to [Blue Sky 2]
- stop [all]
- When the score reaches 5:
- The balloon is hidden.
- The background changes to Blue Sky 2.
- The game stops because the player has completed the target.
Step 2: Balloon Click Script
This script runs whenever the player clicks the balloon.
1. Detect balloon click
Block: when this sprite clicked
- The script starts whenever the player clicks the balloon.
2. Change the balloon costume
Block: switch costume to [balloon1-b]
- The balloon changes its appearance after being clicked.
- This gives visual feedback to the player.
3. Play a sound
Block: play sound [Drip Drop] until done
- A sound effect plays when the balloon is successfully hit.
4. Increase the score
Block: change [Score] by 1
- The player's score increases by 1 for every successful balloon shot.
5. Increase the speed
Block: change [Speed] by 0.2
- The balloon becomes slightly faster after every successful hit.
- This makes the game progressively more challenging.
6. Set rotation style
Block: set rotation style [all around]
- The balloon is allowed to rotate freely when its direction changes.
7. Point the balloon downward
Block: point in direction 180
- The balloon is pointed downward before returning to its initial position.
8. Move the balloon back
Block: glide 1 secs to x: [x position] y: [-170]
- The balloon smoothly glides to the bottom of the stage.
- It keeps its current x position and moves to y = -170.
9. Reset the balloon
Block: broadcast [Move to initial position]
- A broadcast message tells the other script to move the balloon back into position.
- The next balloon shot can then begin.
🎮 Game Logic
Click Balloon → Score +1 → Speed increases → Balloon resets
If the player misses 3 balloons → Game Over
If the player reaches Score = 5 → Game Won
