Plush toys are known for their funny expressions, realistic teeth, and unique personalities. In this project, I combined sewing and 3D printing to create a custom Boba Plush. This is inspired by the ZURU Fuggler Hairy Fuggs toy, but to make this plush different I designed themed boba tea accessories, including a removable boba cup and a straw attachment, to give the character a fun and unique look.

This project is suitable for the Toys, Games & Puzzles Contest because it transforms a collectible-style toy into an original handmade creation using multiple maker skills. The body is sewn from faux fur fabric while the accessories are designed in Tinkercad and 3D printed.

The following reference images were used to study the appearance and proportions of the ZURU Fuggler Hairy Fuggs toy, while designing this custom Boba Plush.

Making the Plush Body

The main part of this project is creating the Plush's body. Using faux fur fabric, trace and cut out two identical body shapes. I based my dimensions on a Fuggler online that was approximately 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide, but you can adjust the size to fit your own design.

Place both pieces together with the fur facing inward and sew around the edges using a sewing machine. Leave a small opening so the body can be turned inside out and stuffed later. After sewing, turn the body right-side out so the fur is visible on the outside.

Next, fill the body with polyfill stuffing. Add small amounts at a time and distribute the stuffing evenly so the Fuggler keeps its shape. Continue stuffing until the body feels firm but still soft. Once you are satisfied with the shape, hand sew the opening closed.

At this stage, the body should be fully assembled and ready for facial features and accessories.

After the body is completed, begin adding the Plush's facial features. Start by sewing buttons onto the front of the body to create the eyes. Different button sizes, colors, or styles can give the plush its own unique appearance.

For the mouth, cut a piece of foam into the desired shape and size. Since Fugglers are known for their large mouths and unusual expressions, experiment with different shapes before attaching it. Once you are satisfied with the design, secure the foam to the front of the body using hot glue.

Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the next steps. The face should now be taking shape and begin to resemble a Fuggler.

Boba Accessories

Use the Tinkercad link below to access, modify, and export the accessory designs as STL files for 3D printing.

Alternatively, you can design your own accessories in Tinkercad using the instructions below:

  1. A boba tea cup
  2. A drinking straw

The cup can be made from cylinders and basic shapes. The straw can be created using a narrow cylinder that is tilted at an angle.

Once the designs are finished, export the files as STL files and prepare them for 3D printing.

Printing the Accessories

Print both models using PLA filament. After printing, remove any supports and lightly sand rough edges if necessary.

Test-fit the accessories with the plush toy to ensure everything fits properly before attaching them.

Final Assembly

Once the Plush body and accessories are complete, begin assembling the final project.

Glue the 3D-printed boba cup onto the Plush's hand and check that it fits securely. Then attach the straw accessory to the top of the Plush's head using hot glue or another fastening method. Make sure the straw is positioned correctly on top of the Plush's head.

If desired, paint the 3D-printed accessories to add more color and make them stand out. Once all pieces are attached, trim any loose threads and make any final adjustments to the body or facial features.

The completed project is a custom Boba Plush that combines sewing, plush-making, and 3D printing into one unique toy design.
