Cardboard Honeycomb Organizer Shelves

I made these cute little organizer shelves for my work space.

They cost me almost nothing as only materials I used was a recycled sheet of cardboard and one hot glue stick.

They might not seem very sturdy but mine actually held up against 1 kg of weight.

Tools & Materials

You will need:

  • A box cutter or an X-acto knife
  • Set square
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors* (optional)

The only material I used is a sheet of cardboard

Measurements

I made hexagons 9 cm per side and 10 cm deep.

I bent the cardboard along the grain to get the straight edge that I used for drawing lines.

Cuts and Bends

I cut the rectangle out and made shallow cuts across, against the grain.

Then I bent the cardboard along the cuts making sure that cuts were facing outside. Otherwise the measurements would get messed up.

The Backing

I made a template using a graph paper but you can also print out a simple hexagon.

Then I glued the paper template to the cardboard and cut it out using the set square to make sure that my cuts were straight.

Assembly

I wrapped the rectangle around the hexagon back and started gluing.

I started with tacking the corners and then applied the glue all the way around and up the connecting side, making sure to smooth out the hot glue with a nozzle of the gun. Then i added more hot glue on the back.

I added extra hot glue on the outside of the connecting sides to reinforce the link.

Trim

I trimmed the excess hot glue with scissors.

Hanging

I ended up making 6 of these and when they were done I hung them up using just a single thumbtack per honeycomb.

They held up perfectly in the field test.

The heaviest thing i put on these shelves is my paint supply which is around 500 grams.

I hope you'll give this project a try.
