Chainmaille 101: Mobi Cages

mobicage_13.jpg

First thing about this weave that you need to know is that it is made from 5 AR sizes the last size not entirely needs to exist or even be a ring. i'll go into further explanation when we get there. but the ring sizes you are going to need are:

(these are what i used, you are not limited by these sizes.)

16swg 3/8 for the largest rings.

16swg 5/16 for the larger ring.

16swg 3/16 + .010 for the connection rings.

18swg 3/16 for the central rings and

10awg 1/9 for the inner captives. (just use a bead)

Color Key:

Blue = done or inactive rings.

Green = Active rings

Red = Interpolated or "go through" rings.

Yellow = Orbital/Captive

Purple = Junk color, but i'm using it for captive here.

Supplies

Pliers,

Wire,

Mandrells

Assemble

1. Start off buy making a simple 6 ring mobi from the largest or your rings.

2. Now add a restricter to the mobi pattern like this. be sure to get it though two of the rings in a consecutive pattern.

3.Add you central ring, doing so now will save you much trubble later

4. Next continue adding the restrictor rings thru the mobi and your central ring.

5. Now if you need to is a good time to add in a mandrel or other tool to help support your work while you assemble it. For this tut im not going to have it visible for clarity in the weave.

6. Okay now we need to make another mobi connecting it to the restricters as we go around.

7. Make sure you following ring also go through your previous rings and the two restrictors.

mobicage_8.jpg

8. Just keep a going round..lol

mobicage_9.jpg

9. When you done you sould have a section that looks like this, in witch the mobi are locked in place, but still flexable. now the hard part.

mobicage_10.jpg

10. Add in the the larger rings around the core of the mobi. Note: you could do this at the same time you made the mobi, but i found that vary confusing until the mobi was locked.

mobicage_11.jpg

11. Time for that odd ring! you don't need this one at all, it just to hold open the mobi and press the two orbital rings on the inside of the mobi to each side. you can use a marble or bead as well. or just leave it out and add a third orbital ring to the outer section.

12. To close this side up See the above steps. time to repeat repeat repeat

13. there is no 13, just continue till your done.
