Chill Guy Projector

I made a lamp out of cardboard and cut out my specific design out of paper. I’ve always been interested in making a projector myself, so I added something funny to make it more interesting. I combined the picture of “Chill Guy” and my projector to remind me to calm down when I see the images. I hope you have as much fun creating this as I did.

Supplies

  1. Large heavy duty cardboard
  2. Paper
  3. Liquid glue
  4. LED light bulb
  5. Hot glue gun
  6. Laser printer machine
  7. Black construction paper
  8. Pipe cleaners
  9. ruler
  10. Large heavy duty cardboard
  11. Paper
  12. Liquid glue
  13. LED light bulb
  14. Hot glue gun
  15. Laser printer machine

  18. ruler

AutoCAD

Google an image of “Chill Guy” and save it to your computer as a pdf. Open AutoCAD and use polyline to outline the image. Once you complete the outline, draw a circle at the size of 2.25. Size down your “chill guy” into that circle and center it. Replicate this model 6 times for your lamp.

Lamp CAD Drawing

We’re going to draw the circles for our lamp body. Draw each circle at the given size and offset at .5.

Circle 1- size at 1.25

Circle 2- Size at 1.8750

Circle 3- Size at 1.3750

Circle 4- Size at 2.0

Circle 5- Size at 1.65

Circle 6- Size at 1.5

Circle 7-Size at 2.0

Circle 8-Size at 1.75

Circle 9- Size at 2.25

Light Source Cube

Now we need to draw the center piece which will hold the light for our lamp. My light source will require a space 3x3 to fit. According to my size of light, I drew a square 3x3 and offsetted it by .5. I drew this 6 times to create the area my light source will be placed. Measure your light source and create the appropriate sized box to fit it. Have a total of 6 faces for the cube your light source will be placed in.

Laser All Parts Out

Once you have everything drawn, prepare the sketch by moving everything around so that it will fit in one laser print out. Export your autoCAD dwg file into any laser printer software you have. Print out all the pieces and prepare to start constructing. Make sure to construct your lamp out of the double sided cardboard. The “chill guy” sketches will be lasered onto paper.

Construct!

Take each circle and stack them according to their size, going largest to smallest. Once you have them stacked, take the 2nd largest circle and glue your paper “chill guy” on it. Plug in your hot glue gun and start assembling.

For your squares, assemble them into a cube and make sure your light source fits.

Take the black construction paper and measure out a 3.5 by 3.5 square. Cut it out and measure out 1.75 to find the center. Draw a circle in the center with a radius of .5. Cut out the circle and repeat this step 4 times.

Take 2 pipe cleaners and create a cross on the top face of your cube. This will help hold your light source in place. Take your light source and center it in the cube so that the light will be evenly distributed in all directions. Use pipe cleaners to hold the light source in place.

Once you have all of these pieces cut out, take your first “chill guy” lamp and glue onto one side of the cube. Take one of your 3.5x3.5 black paper pieces and glue it on the inside of your cube so that the light will travel through the hole and help the image show clearer. Repeat this process 3 more times.

Putting It All Together

Now that you have all the chill guys glued to 4 sides of the cube, cut out 2 more 3.5x3.5 black paper pieces. Glue one piece on the bottom. For the top, glue one edge of the black construction paper to the cardboard. On the opposite edge, use 1 inch pipe cleaners and glue onto ends of paper. Use another 2 pieces of 1 inch pipe cleaners so that these pieces can help the lid/top paper close in place.
