Having a caddy at home to carry and store the crayons is a must! So I have decided to make one to store my nephews crayons. It was a fun and easy build and it took me a couple of hours to make and finish it.

If you want to make one too, here is what you need

Tools And Materials:

  • 12 mm thick plywood (Baltic birch in my case)
  • 4 mm thick plywood
  • Band saw or jig saw or scroll saw
  • Double sided tape
  • Scissors
  • Router
  • Round Router bit
  • Brad nail gun
  • Staple gun
  • Wood glue

Here is a video of the building process:

Templates

Print out the provided template*, then take a piece of plywood, long enough to fit the two sides of the tote.

Once you have your plywood ready, attach the template on it using some double sided tape.

*Make sure you download and print the provided PDF file because all exact dimensions are in there and also check out the video!

Cutting Out the Sides

On the band saw cut out the the first side, sand it smooth all around and then trace and cut the other side as well. Of course you can print the side templates twice and cut them both on the band saw at once.

Router Time

Round over all the edges on both sides using your router and a round router bit.

Making the Grooves

You have to make some grooves on the sides in order to fit the dividers. This can be done with an radial arm saw, or just with a circular saw. The grooves must be 4mm deep on the front and back sides and 2mm deep on the central divider.

Again with your router and a round router bit, round over all the edges of the plywood pieces

Assembling the Tote

Now its time to assemble the tote. You are going to need a brad nail gun or just some regular nails and some wood glue.

Bottom Pannel

20161120_151916.Still032.jpg

For the bottom we are going to use a piece of 4mm thick plywood.

Cut out a piece for the bottom and secure it under the tote with some wood glue and brad nails or staples or just some 20 mm nails.

Handle

20161120_151916.Still037.jpg

Again for the handle cut out the shape from the provided PDF and attach it on a piece 12mm plywood. Cut it out on the band saw or with a jig saw and sand it smooth. Use your router to round all the edges. Attach the handle to the tote using wood glue and some brads or 25mm nails

The Dividers

Cut the dividers out of 4mm thick plywood! Test fit them to see if they fit snugly! You are ready for painting!

Your crayon carrying tote is ready, now you can varnish it or paint it the way you like it, or use a stencil and a spray paint to write on it like I did.

Hope you liked my instructable.

Have fun !!
