Create a Flower With Colored Pencil

IMG_0002.jpeg

I created this flower drawing to showcase the beauty of botanical flowers and the color blue. I find this color very light and pleasant.

Prep Your Space

open to a new page in your sketchbook! This step is an optional one but if you want to, draw border where the space will be blank so your art can really pop!

Prepare Your Background

Pick out your dark blue shade from your colored pencils and lightly shade your space ensuring it is all a light blue. As you can see in the picture, we will build on this base to create depth and shade.

Rough Sketch

IMG_0756.jpeg

Start roughly sketching out where the petals of your flower belong! For this step, you can either use the finished product in the intro as a reference or find a different reference. Do NOT worry about creating shade, just mark out where your petals will go. The attached image is an example of this in the later stage as I filled in my petals, ignore the finished petals

Outer Shadows

Now, since you know where your petals go, look at your reference closely and look at the darkest shadows. Go in with your black colored pencil and lightly shade the darkest areas of your drawing

Defining Shadows

After, go in directly with your dark blue shade and lightly go over the black, then shade in the edges of your petals according to your reference photo. To do this, go over your second darkest shadows with your purple pencil and go over your purple with your dark blue shade.

Incorporating Light

After this, lightly fill in the remaining medium toned parts of your drawing with just the dark blue. Remember to be mindful of light spaces and water droplets by just leaving those spaces blank

Adding Volume

To finish off, refer to your reference and lightly shade with some purple in places with a more purple tinge and add some VERY light shading *around* your lightest parts and the water droplet highlights

Optional: Add Highlights

Optional: if you own a white gel pen, use it to add more delicate hints of white to your water droplets to make it shine.
