Hi makers! In this instructable I'll show you how to transform discarded plastic materials into functional and visually appealing wallets. By applying basic crafting techniques and heat, you will create a durable, customized product while promoting sustainable practices. It is an ideal activity for educators, students, and eco-conscious makers seeking to reduce waste creatively and having fun during the process.

Supplies

Before starting, make sure you have the following materials and tools prepared:

Materials:

  1. Clean, dry plastic bags or wrappers (avoid metallic-coated ones). A variety of colors and textures in your plastic selection will enhance the final result.
  2. Parchment paper (it should be at least twice the size of an A4 sheet)
  3. Printed wallet template (A4 sheet)

Tools:

  1. Household iron (steam function disabled)
  2. Heat-resistant surface (e.g., ironing board)
  3. Scissors
  4. Pen or marker
  5. Heavy books or weights

Creating the Recycled Plastic Sheet

The first step involves fusing layers of plastic using heat to create a NEW SHEET OF MATERIAL suitable for crafting.

Instructions:

  1. Design the layout: Place a sheet of parchment paper on a heat-resistant surface. Arrange small pieces of plastic over it to create a composition. Let your imagination run wild, have fun creating, and enjoy the process! Ensure that the entire area is fully covered, leaving no gaps between the plastic pieces.
  2. Cover the arrangement: Place a second sheet of parchment paper on top, enclosing the plastic between the two sheets. This prevents the plastic from adhering to the iron or work surface during heat application.
  3. Apply heat: Set the iron to a medium temperature and deactivate the steam function. Carefully press over the parchment paper using slow, even motions. Monitor the behavior of the plastic—some types may require more heat or multiple passes. The result should be a smooth, fused sheet with a thickness and consistency similar to light cardboard. NOTE! Plastics vary in their response to heat. It is recommended to test a small sample before proceeding with your full layout.
  4. Cool and flatten: Once fused, place a flat, heavy object (such as books) on top while the material cools, to prevent warping or curling.

Time to Peel!

New material

Once cooled, remove the parchment paper to reveal the final sheet. If it feels too thin or weak, additional layers of plastic may be added and fused again to improve durability.

Cut the Template

Cutting the template

Now that the sheet is ready, it’s time to cut the template. It has three different type of lines:

Solid line (—): Cut

Dashed line (_ _ _): Fold

Dotted line (···): Score for reference

Follow the solid line to cut out the template, and remember the others. They are going to be needed later.

Cutting and Folding the Wallet

Last step. Finally it’s time to cut and assemble the wallet.

  1. Trace the shape: Position the template over the recycled sheet and trace its outline using a marker or pen.
  2. Cut the material: Follow the traced lines to cut out the wallet shape.
  3. Fold the sheet: Use the dashed lines as reference and fold the wallet according to the numbered instructions.
  4. Seal the edges: Once folded, use the iron briefly to seal the outer flaps. Remember to use the dotted line as a reference

You're Done!

Congratulations — you’ve just turned trash into treasure! 🪄♻️

Now you’ve got a unique, durable wallet and one less plastic bag in the world. Keep experimenting with colors, patterns, and styles — every piece you make is one of a kind.

If you enjoyed this project, share your results and inspire others to create, reuse, and reimagine.

Happy making!
