Tired of using random items as bookmarks? Making your own custom decorative bookmark using materials you already have at home is easier than it may seem! The instructions below are intended to guide you to do just that. This project is perfect for personal use, gifts, or even group crafting. By the end of this, you’ll learn how to create, decorate, and finish a laminated bookmark that’s durable and your style.

Supplies

  1. Decorative paper (scrapbook paper, card stock, wrapping paper)
  2. Scissors or paper cutter
  3. Pencil
  4. Hole puncher
  5. Ribbon, yarn, or string
  6. Markers, stickers, stamps (for decorating)
  7. Clear packing tape
  8. Ruler

Gather Your Supplies

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

You’ll need:

  1. Decorative paper (scrapbook paper, card stock, wrapping paper)
  2. Scissors or paper cutter
  3. Pencil
  4. Hole puncher
  5. Ribbon, yarn, or string
  6. Markers, stickers, stamps (for decorating)
  7. Clear packing tape
  8. Ruler


Cut Out the Bookmark Shape

Step 2: Cut Out the Bookmark Shape

  1. Use scissors or a paper cutter to cut your paper into a rectangle or other shape
  2. Use ruler for easier measuring, Common size is 2" x 6"


Decorate the Bookmark

Step 3: Decorate the Bookmark

  1. Use markers, stickers, drawings, stamps, or glued paper cutouts to decorate the bookmark however you like.
  2. Add a quote, your name, or a design theme (flowers, stars, bookish icons).


Optional Lamination

Step 4: Optional Lamination

  1. Carefully place your decorated bookmark between two strips of wide, clear packing tape.
  2. Press and smooth the tape to avoid bubbles.

Trim the Edges

Step 5: Trim the Edges

  1. Cut the excess lamination, leaving a small border around your bookmark to keep the seal intact.

Punch a Hole at the Top

Step 6: Punch a Hole at the Top

  1. Use a hole puncher to add a small hole at the top of the bookmark.
  2. Make sure it’s not too close to the edge

Add a Ribbon or Tassel

Step 7: Add a Ribbon or Tassel

  1. Thread a ribbon, string, or yarn through the hole and tie it securely to add a decorative touch.
  2. You may use a charm or bead at the end for flair.
