I’m a huge fan of Brawl Stars, a multiplayer online battle arena game developed by the Finnish company Supercell. One of the brawlers (characters) is called Colette: a quirky, obsessive Brawl Stars superfan who wields a scrapbook to deal percentage-based damage. She’s obsessed with all the characters, to the point of creepiness.

In this Instructable, I will be showing you how to make Colette's Scrapbook fully out of cardboard, which you can use to customise your notebook/ journal book cover. Have fun making it!

Supplies

  1. Reused cardboard- you can cutout a shoe box or a cardboard box (a very sustainable alternative, instead of using coloured paper)
  2. Notebook (x1)- any size of notebook will work here, but ideally it should be A4 size.
  3. Scissors (x1)
  4. Eraser (x1)
  5. Pencil (x1)- HB pencil will work the best for sketching
  6. Paint brush (x2)- for the front and back book cover you may wish to use a thicker paint brush (the one I used is Flat Paint Brush size 18), and for the accessories you may use a thinner paint brush to paint the details (the one I used is a Flat Paint Brush size 5)
  7. 30-cm ruler (x1)
  8. Tissue- for drying brushes
  9. Tap water- for washing brushes
  10. Acrylic paints
  11. Craft knife (x1)
  12. Hot glue gun (x1)

As you can see on the cardboards, I have labelled them to make it easier for you to identify which cardboard to use on each step.

There are 3 different cardboards used in different parts of the Colette's Scrapbook:

  1. Front and Back Book Cover- the 2 cardboards should be bigger or the same size as the notebook you are using.
  2. 2 Straps and Book Spine- the 2 straps and book spine are slim and long rectangular cardboards, it could be the sides of your cutout shoe box or cardboard box.
  3. Other Accessories (pen holder, yellow rings, 2 squares, stardrop icon)- the other accessories are just the other parts of your cutout shoe box or cardboard box. Do not throw them away, because you might be able to use them later on in the steps to decorate your Colette's Scrapbook.

Creating the Base of Colette's Scrapbook (1st Layer)

Screenshot 2025-08-16 at 11.05.27 PM.png
Screenshot 2025-08-16 at 11.12.02 PM.png

To start off, grab the notebook and trace it two times onto the cardboard that is labelled as Front and Back on the sticky note. After that, cut out the tracing on the cardboard. Now, measure the spine of the book with the cardboard that is labelled as Spine of the Book (just like how I did there in the picture above). Then, cut out according to the length of your notebook spine.

Adding the Straps (2nd Layer)

Screenshot 2025-08-16 at 11.35.28 PM.png
Screenshot 2025-08-16 at 11.37.42 PM.png

To make the second layer of Colette's Scrapbook, take one rectangle cardboard that is labelled as the 2 Straps. The 2 straps are 4cm (width) x 15cm (length).

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Sorry, I forgot to take a picture. The light purple book spine (on top of the front and back cover) are made the same way as the book spine shown in Step 1. The violet straps should be on top of the light purple book spine (as shown in the 4th picture above).

Adding Small Accessories (3rd Layer)

Here are some small accessories that you should add to make Colette's Scrapbook amazing:

  1. Pen holder
  2. Yellow rings (one one each straps)
  3. Squares (under the stardrop icon)
  4. Stardrop icon (on top of two squares)

Pen holder:

To make a pen holder, simply cut out a 4cm (width) x 6cm (length) rectangle using one of the Other Accessories cardboards. Then, divide the rectangle into 4 sections and make sure that each section should be around 1.5cm in length. After dividing it up into 4 sections, gently cut it into 4 sections using a craft knife (only cut one side of the cardboard, DO NOT cut through completely). Fold the rectangle to form a cuboid. Don't worry that it is not glued, we will be gluing it with a hot glue gun later on.

Yellow rings:

To make the two yellow rings, simply trace around a token or something like a bottle cap. And then, draw two small rectangles-like shapes on the right side of the yellow ring (like what I did in the picture above). To cut out the donut shape for the yellow rings, gently poke through around the cardboard. You can also poke through the cardboard from the back to make it easier to cut with scissors.

*NOTE (safety concern): please be careful when using a craft knife, especially when poking through the cardboard, it can be quite dangerous.

Squares (under the stardrop icon):

To make the squares, cut out two 5cm x 5cm squares using a cardboard that is labelled as Other Accessories. For one of the cutout squares, poke four holes on each corner with a pencil (like what I did in the picture above).

Stardrop icon:

To make the stardrop icon, trace around a token or something like a bottle cap (just like how the yellow rings are made). After that, divide the circle into 6 sections, it is same concept to how you would cut a pizza or a cake. Now, draw a total of 6 triangles around the circle (shown in the picture above). Lastly, cut out the stardrop icon.

Sketch Out the Spike Bookmark

If you don't know what Spike looks like, please check out the 1st picture attached above to get an idea of what your Spike Bookmark might look like.

Using a cardboard labelled as Other Accessories, pick out a rectangle cardboard and sketch out a rectangle with a measure of 7.5cm x 8cm. Draw a curve inside the sketched rectangle to create Spike's head. Then, draw Spike's flower (hair?) and give it two eyes and a smiley face. Cut out the smiley face with your craft knife, the smiley face is for clipping into your notebook as a bookmark (shown in the reference picture).

Now, do a functionality test to see if the Spike Bookmark works. If it doesn't work well, then you may consider making the smiley face wider, so that it would be easier to clip onto the page.

Paint EVERYTHING

Now that you have successfully cut out every parts of Colette's Scrapbook (with the book spine on the front cover), it's time to paint everything!

Things to keep an eye out for before + after painting:

  1. Please wear an apron- it is important to wear an apron, so that you wont get paints on your clothes.
  2. Newspaper on the table- it would be great if you can get some newspaper on your table, if you do not want to get paints on your table, it can be hard to wash once the acrylic paint is dried.
  3. Wash your hands after painting- as you can see in the picture above, I was using my dirty hands to open the curtains, and got some acrylic paint onto the curtains. It is very hard to wash the dried acrylic paint, so please be careful.

Front and back book cover:

Let's start with painting the Front and Back cover of Colette's Scrapbook! Mix primary red with white, the ratio that I used is primary red to white is 1:2. I found it easier and faster to mix the paint with a small cardboard piece, since it has a larger surface area than my paint brush. After mixing the paint, you should have a cotton candy pink colour and paint it on both sides of the Front and Back cover.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: if you have excess paints on the sides, make sure to paint it over with your paint brush.

2 straps + pencil holder:

Paint both the 2 straps and pencil holder violet on both sides of the cardboard.

Book spine + 2 squares (under the stardrop icon):

Mix white, violet, and primary red together to get light purple. The ratio of white to violet to primary red should be 2:1:1. Paint the book spine on both sides (x3). Paint both of the squares under the stardrop the same colour as the book spine.

Yellow rings + stardrop icon + small details on the squares (Accessories):

Paint both the yellow rings (x2) and the stardrop icon lemon yellow. For the small details on the squares, you can see that I have dip my pencil tip into the yellow paint and then poke my pencil into the small holes to enhance the overall realism and to create small details.

Spike Bookmark:

Spike's head: Mix emerald and white to get mint green. The ratio of emerald to white should be 1:3.

Spike's hair: Permanent rose

Hot Glue EVERYTHING Except the Spike Bookmark

Screenshot 2025-08-17 at 1.35.38 PM.png
Screenshot 2025-08-17 at 1.50.36 PM.png

Before gluing all the pieces, put all the cutout pieces on where they should be. Work your way through from the very 1st layer to the 3rd. For the Front and Back book cover, just put a small amount of glue (like the size of a bean) on each corner (like what I did in the picture).

Outline With a Black Marker and a Pen

Stardrop icon: draw the Stardrop icon. If you do not know what it looks like, I have a reference picture attached above or you can just follow what I did in the picture above.

Spike bookmark: draw Spike's eyes with a black pen, and outline the Spike bookmark with a thick black marker.

COMPLETE!
