DIY Modular Workbench

The idea was to develop a workbench capable of adapting to different situations, with the possibility of adjusting its height according to specific needs. Taking advantage of the versatility of the Oikum cubes, I designed a modular solution that allows me to configure the workbench according to my requirements at any given time.

In addition to flexibility and adaptability, sustainability was a central factor in this development, as the cubes are made from recycled and fully recyclable material. This approach combines functionality, modularity, and environmental responsibility—values I prioritize and that guide the way I think about and develop my projects.

Supplies

Gather the Necessary Materials

First, gather all the materials previously described, which are necessary for the correct assembly of your workbench.

The selected number of oikum cubes allows for a workbench with an initial height of 93 cm. However, this height can be adjusted according to your needs by removing the required cubes (min. 23 cm – max. 93 cm). Each cube has a height of 10 cm, making it easy to customise the workbench in a simple, practical, and modular way.

Start by Drilling the Lids

To begin the workbench assembly process, start by drilling the oikum lids using a Ø4.3 mm drill bit.

To make it easier to position the holes accurately and consistently, you can use a washer as a reference, placing it against the inner walls of the lid and then drilling. This method is not mandatory, but it makes the process simpler, especially for those who, like me, do not have much experience.

Mark and Drill the Points on the Tabletop

After drilling the lids, proceed to drill the workbench tabletop using a Ø3 drill bit. This step must be carried out with particular care, as it directly affects the stability and proper functioning of the workbench.

Following the previously defined measurements, mark the drilling points to ensure that the lids are aligned with each other and centred on the tabletop. This alignment is essential to guarantee an even weight distribution, prevent imbalances, and ensure the structure’s stability during use.

Pay special attention to the drilling depth in the tabletop to avoid drilling completely through the material. To make depth control easier and the process safer and simpler, it is recommended to mark the drill bit. In my case, I applied tape to the drill bit, serving as a depth limiter during drilling.

Repeat this process 4 times.

Screw the Oikum Lids Onto the Top

Once both components have been drilled, it is time to screw the oikum lids onto the workbench tabletop. Place a Ø4 washer on each screw to ensure better load distribution and a more secure fastening.

Next, position the lids on the previously marked spots and proceed with screwing them in, making sure they are firmly fixed and aligned with the tabletop.

Repeat this process 4 times.

Insert the Oikum Cubes – Setting the Workbench Height

After attaching the 4 oikum lids, proceed to insert the oikum cubes into them. Each lid holds 9 cubes, resulting in a workbench with a total height of 93 cm.

This height was chosen to allow comfortable and ergonomic standing work, ensuring proper posture while using the workbench.

And it’s complete: your workbench is ready, fully adaptable to your needs, and perfect for a wide range of projects, as shown in the images.

Designed with modularity and flexibility in mind, this workbench evolves with you, adjusting to each task and always offering the ideal configuration. The removable cubes make it easy to disassemble, transport, and reorganize.

More than just a workbench, it is a sustainable, practical, and versatile solution—crafted to support your creativity and turn every working moment into an efficient experience.
