DIY Shelf

IMG_0537.jpg

I made a simple shelf that has to spots to put stuff in. It is two feet tall and one foot wide, because I wanted to improve my wood working skills and put all the stuff I've made on it. and so I could make my first shelf. This is also a good father, son time.

Supplies

You will need...

  1. Lamanated pine wood
  2. 8x2 screws ( roughly 20)
  3. inpacted screw gun
  4. Table saw
  5. Sanding sponges
  6. wood stain
  7. compound saw
  8. drill
  9. staple gun

Buy Supplies and Wood

IMG_0453 (1).jpg

Buy all the wood you'll need and screws and impacted screw driver (if you don't have one ) Get a sander sponges (if you want a smooth shelf) and get wood stane (if you want a darker color for your shelf) or white paint, get a table saw, and a Compound Saw,

Measure Wood

Based on how big you want the shelf, measure to that size. My shelf is 2 feet tall and 1 foot wide. (list wood lengthens)

Cuting the Wood

IMG_0464.jpg

Based on your measurements, use the table saw to cut the back piece of the shelf, then use the compound saw to cut the rest of the wood for the shelf.

Sand the Wood

Get your sanding sponges and sand both faces of the wood. (the more you sand the smoother it will be) After that, sand the outside egdes of the wood.

Stain the Wood

When you stain the wood you have to follow the line on the wood so it looks good.

Apply stain with a rag for the majority of the wood surface and for the sides. (for the sides and the top and bottom it doesn't matter which way you go)

Drilling Holes in Wood

You drill holes in spots were you put your screws so the wood doesn't crack.

Assemble Frame

First you screw the side pieces to the back then you add your shelves. Then you screw the top and the bottom piece.

Reflectings

When doing this project I learnd that it takes time to build a shelf, and you can't make a lot of mistakes, or else you'll have to start the project over, and you don't want to start over becaues then it takes even moer time to finish the shelf. While making this shelf I also learned that if you don't drill holes in the wood, then when you go to put the screws in, the wood will crack, and then it won't look as good. This project is good if you want to spend time with your friends, family,or people you build stuff with.
