DIY Soccer Ball Mathematically EVA Foam Soccer Ball (Truncated Icosahedron)
This activity is the perfect "learn-by-doing" blueprint. While students cut, and glue the panels together, teachers can explain the fascinating interconnected history of geography, classic art (Leonardo da Vinci), quantum chemistry (the Cāā Buckyball molecule), and natural geometry (honeycombs and insect eyes)
The activity itself is simple, making it an ideal opportunity to introduce students to basic geometric concepts. Since the construction is straightforward, teachers can devote more time to meaningful discussions and encourage students to explore the mathematics behind the design.
Supplies
Materials
- Black EVA foam (or craft foam)
- White EVA foam (or craft foam)
- Glue suitable for EVA foam (or contact cement/cyanoacrylate)

Obtain the Geometric Blueprint
There are many drawings of soccer balls online, but for a mathematically accurate one, I recommend two options:
- The Free Alternative (Wikimedia Commons): You can use the open-source version on Wikimedia Commons. It provides a geometrically accurate 2D projection of the truncated icosahedron. It is ideal if you just want the raw mathematical layout for free.

Cut the Templates.
Manual procedure
- Cut out the different paper template parts. Mark each piece with its corresponding number to keep track of the assembly.
- Place each template piece over the foam or cardboard and trim the shapes along the outlines.
Machine procedure
Alternatively, you can use a cutting machine. KRAFT STEAM Pack includes SVG & DXF files
- Separate the pieces by color and group the shapes accordingly.
- Cut each color using the matching sheet of material.
Glue the Parts
Apply glue to the back of the black pieces, then carefully align them with the base.
Talk
Look at the different balls around you. Which ones are true spheres? Which are based on polyhedra, such as a dodecahedron or a truncated icosahedron? Identify the polygons that form each shape and discuss how geometry is used in sports equipment and everyday objects.
