Decorative Coaster - Creepy and Glowing

IMG_20250722_182824.jpg

I used to love to ride my bicycle. It was advanced for that time. Soon, it broke down and could not be repaired. The parts were sold off, except the gears.

I thought, the gears are rusting for no reason and could be utilized for some other purpose.

In order to give it a twist, I added a hanging eyeball.

The image shown is that of a new plant inside a bottle placed on the gears stand.

I gave it color and shine to make it attract.

Supplies

  1. Gears from a bicycle. You can use one, two, or a big gearset. In my case, they are already attached and made of rusted metal.
  2. Vinegar, lemon juice and salt, and baking soda - to degrease and remove the rust.
  3. White, black, blue, red paint. I have used acrylic.
  4. Gloss Mod Podge.
  5. A plant with a stand.
  6. A small decorative ball or a Ping-Pong ball.
  7. Paint brush. I used two - one to paint the gears and another smaller one to paint the eyeball.
  8. Solder wire.

Degrease and Remove Rust

Degrease and remove the rust preparing a solution of vinegar, salt, baking soda, and lemon juice with water. Place the gears inside this solution for around 2-3 hours.

Wipe Clean the Gears

Wipe the gears clean using a clean cloth. Check for any remaining rust.

Paint the Gears

Apply Mod Podge Gloss to the gears thoroughly. Let it dry for around 30 minutes.

I used black and white combo to paint the gears. You can even use some other color like red and white, or red and yellow, or green and blue to make it sparkle.

Prepare the Eyeball

Apply mod podge gloss on the eyeball as well.

Paint the ball with an eye pattern using black, blue and white color. Make sure, the colors don't leak into each other.

Attach the Assortment Together.

Place the exhibit on the decorative stand.

I have placed a fresh plant inside a glass bottle.

The system has been placed on a newspaper sheet to let it dry.

Your creepy stand is ready!

Use it to showcase plants, as a coaster for cups, as individual decoration with the eyeball placed inside the small hole in the gear.

PS1: I applied some glowing liquid on the stand and the eyeball, now they both glow in the dark.
