I’m going to show you how to create an eye-catching disk lamp using household items. This lamp may look expensive, but it’s actually very affordable to make. I’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide to help you create your own.

Supplies

To make this lamp, you will need the following materials and equipment:

  1. Paper cake cups (size based on your preference)
  2. Plastic bottle or any clear container of your choice
  3. Glue gun
  4. Glue sticks
  5. X-Acto knife
  6. Pen or marker
  7. Lightbulb
  8. Batten fitting
  9. Measuring tape
  10. Electrical wire with switch and plug
  11. Screwdriver (if necessary)

Preparation

Plug in your glue gun to the wall socket to start heating it up. If you don’t have a glue gun, no worries! You can use a candle to melt the glue stick instead.

Preparation

Now, take the light bulb and the batten fitting, and disassemble the batten into its three individual components.

Modification

Take the bottom mounting ring of the batten and cut a slit into the side wall large enough to fit your chosen cable size, which will provide power to the light.

Cutting Container (water Bottle)

Take your chosen container (in this case, an empty water bottle) and use a marker to measure and mark a hole on the top end that will fit the lightbulb baton. Using an X-Acto knife, carefully cut along the marked line. Keep in mind that it's better to cut the hole slightly smaller than the marked line to ensure a snug fit for the baton. Once the hole is cut, use sandpaper to smooth out any sharp edges. Afterward, test the fit of the baton and repeat the process if necessary until the baton fits securely into the hole.

Connection of Electrical Components

Now take the baton and the electrical wire, Cut the wire back by about 25 cm, and strip around 10 cm of insulation from each cable (both positive and negative sides). Once this is done, connect the wires to the lightbulb fitting. Afterward, reassemble the batten fitting with the wires securely connected.

(Remember, do not connect the wires to a wall plug while working on it)

Securing Electrical Wire

Take the heated glue gun and add a drop of glue to the bottom of the electrical fitting, just in front of the slit you previously made. Then, place the wire into the slit, securing it to the base of the baton.

Completing Lamp Base

Next, add a drop of glue to the outer ring of the baton. Then, insert the baton into the hole you previously cut in the water bottle. Place the bottle on a flat surface, ensuring it's standing vertically. Finally, apply more hot glue to the bottom of the bottle, securing the baton and the bottle together firmly.

Adding Paper Cake Cups

Take the paper cake cups and add a drop of glue to the bottom of each one. Then, attach the cup to the bottle, starting at the top (I began in the middle, but you can start wherever you prefer based on your personal style).

Continue stacking the paper cake cups one on top of the other until you reach the bottom of the bottle. There’s no specific pattern or placement required—just place the cups wherever you think they should go.
