What if you could hold the entire Earth in your hand…

including the fiery world hidden beneath it?

I wanted to create something educational, artistic, and useful at the same time.So I decided to turn the Earth itself into a handmade paperweight.

One side shows the Earth we know, oceans, continents, nature.

The other side reveals the Earth's internal structure, the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.

This project is simple to make, educational, and surprisingly relaxing to paint. It can be used as:

A paperweight

A geography model

Desk decor

A science project

A handmade gift

People usually see the Earth only from the outside.

This project lets us hold both the surface and the hidden core in our hands at once.

And somehow, that makes the planet feel even more fascinating.

Let’s make it!

Supplies

  4. Green
  5. Yellow
  6. Orange

Making the Hemisphere

To create the base shape of the Earth, I used a bowl as a mold but you can use any hemispherical object as a mold.

Firstly prepared the mold by applying a layer of any slippery material such as oil, petroleum jelly.

Then prepare Plaster of Paris and spread it inside the bowl to form a smooth curved shape. Using a bowl helped in achieving a clean spherical structure without needing special tools.

Now leave the POP inside the mold for a few hours so it can dry and harden properly

Removing the Hemisphere From the Mold

Now after letting the POP dry completely, Gently removed it from the bowl.

Smooth the area with the help of sandpaper if the area is uneven.

Now draw the continents with the help of a pencil.

Creating the Earth's Inner Layers 🔥

Now comes the most exciting part, revealing what’s hidden inside the Earth.

On the flat cut surface, I painted layers representing:

Crust

Mantle

Outer Core

Inner Core

I used:

Black/brown for the crust edge

Red and orange for the mantle

Bright yellow-orange for the outer core

White-yellow for the inner core

Blending the colors while wet creates a glowing molten effect that makes the inside look alive.

Adding the Continents 🌍

Next, I painted the land areas using green and yellow tones.

I did not try to create a perfectly accurate world map because I wanted the project to look hand-painted and artistic rather than printed or mechanical.

To make the continents stand out,

Use darker green near edges

Blend yellow softly into green

Keep the shapes organic and imperfect

This handmade texture actually adds charm to the final result.

Painting the Oceans 🌊

Now paint th the outer curved surface with different shades of blue.

Instead of using only one flat color, I blended,

Dark blue

Medium blue

Light blue

This gives the oceans more depth and makes the Earth look more realistic and artistic.

I also added small lighter patches to create texture and movement in the water.

Let the paint dry.

The Earth Inside-Out Paperweight is complete!

It’s small enough to fit on a desk, but detailed enough to immediately attract attention.
