Easy Garden With Oikum Cubes
I was looking to create a sustainable garden for my home made from recycled materials. I wanted a planter that was easy to use because I don't have much gardening experience, but I'd like to be able to grow my own vegetables and herbs at home. At the same time, I wanted it to be beautiful to show to my friends and fit well in the space I have available.
That's how the idea of using oikum blocks came about: a solution that allows me to adapt the planter to the available space and even expand it in the future, if necessary. Something flexible, transformable, that doesn't limit me and that can grow with me.
Supplies
• 3 oikum Cubes 2 x 2
• 3 oikum Cube Lid 2 x 2
• 4 oikum Cubes 4 x 2
• 8 oikum Cubes 4 x 1
• 2 oikum Cube Lid 4 x 1
• 4 oikum Cubes 2 x 1
• 6 oikum Cube Lid 2 x 1
- Substrate (2 kg)
- Plants of your choice, can be aromatic, decorative, edible, succulents, etc.
Tools
• Shovel;
• Gloves.
Notes: you can attach labels, identifying your plants.
Gather the Necessary Materials
First, gather all the materials described earlier that you will need to successfully build your planter. Use the plants you prefer; I suggest starting by planting seedlings rather than seeds, as this is the best way to begin your first garden.
Start the Base of the Flower Box
It's very easy to build the base of the planter; simply place two 4x2 cubes horizontally and another two 4x2 cubes vertically, these two sets side by side.
Assembling the Flower Box
It's very easy, the only rule is to place the cubes staggered so that they are better secured, and it also creates a more appealing design. You can follow the assembly in the images.
I built two floors, always respecting the rule (place the cubes staggered between them!).
Place the Lids on the Cubes
Place the respective lids on the oikum cubes, as you can see in the image sequence, and you get your oikum planter. This is just one of the possible variations, because as you may have already noticed, these are cubes that fit together, so the possibilities are endless, you just need creativity, which we have plenty of.
Assemble the Oikum Vase (Cube)
To assemble the oikum planter, you only need a 2 x 2 cube and a 2 x 2 lid – it's that simple. Assemble 3 oikum planters so you can then place different plants in your planter; this way it's easier and less messy if you need to change anything about your plants.
Time to Plant!
In a 2 x 2 cube, start by placing expanded clay at the bottom, then add the substrate and place your plant in a 5 cm hole previously made using a shovel, or by hand, don't be afraid to disturb the soil. And voilà, you have your first little plant. Do the same for the other two pots.
Finishing Up Your Oikum Flower Box
Now all that's left is to place the oikum pots in your oikum planter and put it in its place. As a suggestion, you could add stickers or write on the pots with markers to identify your plants.
Decorate Your Space With the Oikum Flower Box
For me, having the oikum pot nearby is a simple way to reconnect with nature, whether to decorate the house or to grow my own herbs and vegetables. The most important thing is this: bringing a little bit of nature indoors and not being afraid to experiment.
