Fixing Common Mg996r Servo Motor Problems

The Mg996R servo motors are a common and affordable servo motor for robotics projects. Unfortunately, when buying cheap servos ,problems are inevitable.

Here are some common issues as well as steps to be able to take apart and put back together most common servo motors.

This is normally because of stripped gears. I would highly recommend buying metal gear servos as plastic gears deform easily. However I would suggest checking your servos. I bought 18 metal gear servos of Ali Express but 4 /5 were actually plastic

I was using 180 degree servo motors so this is sometimes an issue. I somehow accidently force the gear past its normal rotation and it gets jammed. I just take the back off and reset the gear in the photo.

This one was irritating. I assumed the problem was with the gears.The servo would move in one direction but in the reverse direction became stuck. I found that these little holes in the plastic case were deformed unfortunately not much you can really do here apart from getting a replacement.

I recommend getting metal servo horns as the plastic ones tend to wear down over time. But I primarily used the plastic ones that the servos came with. My issue was that screws would fall out over time due to the vibrations. In the end I used slightly larger screws than the holes in the horn and I also suggest some locktite.

After removing the screws these should be the parts. Once taking apart the motor remember to lubricate gears again before reassembly. Assemble in the order indicated
