Floating Shelf Installation
Floating shelves are a simple way to add storage and decoration to a room without taking up valuable floor space. Whether you want to display photographs, small plants, or decorative items, installing a floating shelf can help make your space more organized and personalized.
In this Instructable, I will show how to install a floating shelf using basic household tools. This project is designed for beginners, including college students, renters (with permission to drill), and homeowners who want to learn basic home improvement skills.
By following these instructions, you will learn how to select a location, measure and mark your wall, locate wall studs, and securely attach a floating shelf.
Supplies
Materials:
- One prefabricated floating shelf
- I purchased mine from Home Depot for about $35.
- Shelf colored round stickers
- Manufacturer-approved mounting screws and hardware
- Included with the Home Depot kit
Tools:
- Power drill
- Appropriate drill bits
- Stud finder
- Bubble level
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Screwdriver or driver bit
Optional:
- Small picture frames, lightweight decorations, or other items to display after installation
Check your shelf kit before purchasing additional hardware. Some floating shelves include brackets and screws, while others require separate mounting supplies. Use only hardware appropriate for the shelf and wall construction.
Collect Materials and Tools
Gather all the materials and tools needed for the installation.
Remove the floating shelf and mounting hardware from their packaging. Inspect the shelf, brackets, and screws for damage or missing pieces.
Clear the area around the wall so you have enough room to work safely.
Pick Your Wall
Choose a wall where you want to install your floating shelf.
Make sure the location provides enough space for the shelf and does not interfere with doors, furniture, or walkways.
Consider what you plan to place on the shelf and whether the height will be convenient.
Check that the wall is suitable for your shelf's mounting system and that there are no known electrical wires or plumbing lines in the proposed drilling area.
Make Your Measurements
Measure the desired height of the shelf using a measuring tape.
Mark the location lightly with a pencil or a small piece of painter's tape.
Account for the distance between the mounting bracket and the top of the finished shelf, using the dimensions provided with your kit.
Check the measurement to make sure the shelf will fit comfortably in the selected space.
Find the Studs
Place the stud finder against the wall according to the tool manufacturer's instructions.
Move the stud finder slowly across the area where you plan to mount the shelf.
Mark the edges of each detected stud using a pencil.
Repeat the scan to verify the approximate center of each stud.
Compare the stud locations with the mounting holes on your shelf bracket. Follow the shelf manufacturer's requirements for attaching the bracket to structural supports.
Important: Do not rely on drywall alone to support a shelf that requires attachment to wall studs.
Mark Your Guide Lines and Level Your Shelf
Position the shelf against the wall at the planned shelf height.
Place the bubble level on the bracket's designated level surface.
Adjust the shelf until the bubble is centered between the guide lines.
Mark the approved screw-hole locations with a pencil.
Remove the shelf and double-check the markings before drilling.
Drill the Pilot Holes
Select the drill bit size recommended by the shelf manufacturer for the mounting screws and wall material.
Confirm that the marked locations are clear of suspected electrical wiring, plumbing, and other concealed utilities.
Position the drill at the first approved mounting mark.
Drill the pilot hole to the manufacturer's specified depth while keeping the drill properly aligned.
Repeat for the remaining approved mounting points.
Important - Stop immediately if you encounter unexpected resistance or suspect a hidden utility.
Drill in Your Screws
Line the shelf up with the drilled pilot holes.
Using the drill or philips screwdriver, drill the provided screws into the pilot holes through the shelf.
Place the bubble level on top of the screw after all screws have been installed to ensure the shelf is level.
Use same color circle stickers to cover up screws.
Decorate and Enjoy
Review the shelf manufacturer's maximum weight capacity and loading recommendations.
Choose lightweight decorative items such as small picture frames, books, or artificial plants.
Arrange the items on the shelf without exceeding its approved load limit.
Step away from the wall and inspect the finished installation.
