Fusing Double Dichroic Glass

Hello my name is Sherry and I have a problem, I am a fused glass junkie.

I have written a few Instructables about how to fuse different types of glass or different things I have discovered in the time I have been fusing glass in microwave kiln.

I am always looking for something new to try and I love playing with it and that moment when you lift the lid, it is almost magical. If you really want to see me get nervous, let me get low on kiln paper.

So, recently, we went to a glass shop in our region and found some new goodies. One of which was double dichroic glass.

Double dichroic is just that. Depending on the color you match it with, it will have a (in this case) copper or blue hue to it. If you lay it on a clear or white base color it will look blue, if you lay it on a dark color it will look copper.

Now being somewhat skeptical, I had to try this just to see if what I was being told was true. Well, let me tell you, it is true. Here is how I found out....

You will of course need your kiln, kiln paper and safety equipment. See the link in the previous step to see what those are.

• You will also need:
• your base color of glass, I chose two for my experiment.
• the piece of double dichroic glass
• your glass cutter
• running pliers
• a straight edge

Basically I measured off inch strips of my base colors. Then I cut them in half. I placed those on my kiln base with fuse works kiln paper and then I cut a slightly narrower strip of the double dicrhroic. I then put that atop the color base glass pieces and centered it up. So beginning the process, I had two squares and a rectangle.

Firing this piece takes a great deal of patience because we don't want to fire it too hot or too quickly or we will hear the ominous tink that comes along with breaking glass, so we are going to fire it for 30 seconds and let it rest for 30 seconds. We are going to this rotation of fire and rest 6 times. After it has rested for the last 30 seconds, we are going to fire it one last time. This will be for 45 seconds. Then we will remove the kiln from the microwave and allow it to cool for 30 MINUTES. Let it cool the entire time. You don't want to get burned. Remember when handling a hot kiln wear your heat resistant gloves.

Once you have allow it to cool for 30 minutes, lift the lid, wearing your gloves and you will see the magic.

Viola' you are finished. Now you can add a bail to it or wire and you can make yourself a stunning pendant to wear or to share.

It is fun, it is magic, it is pretty impressive stuff, so get you some double dichroic glass and let people wonder just how you did it.

Shhhhh....I won't tell them it was as easy as 1, 2, 3.
