Galaxy Mirror Cake

Star Wars LED Lightsaber Galaxy Mirror Cake

How to make a galaxy themed mirror cake. An awesome cake for any sci fi fan!

This instructable covers how to make the mirror cake. I made an LED Light saber cake topper for it. It actually lights up with no specialized wiring. See it here: https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Star-Wars-LED...

Prepare Your Cake

Make a 2 layer 8" cake. I made a cake with the colors I used in my glaze. Stack it and cover with a light layer of buttercream. I used chocolate. I didn't get the frosting perfectly smooth. SO there is some dimension to the cake. The galaxy is not 2 dimensional :) But you can smooth it as much as you want.

For the cake board trim it to be flush with the cake or slightly smaller.

Prep Work Area

You will need a bowl or vase that will stably hold your cake but is smaller around. Place it on a foil lined backing tray. This will make cleanup easier.

Bloom Gelatin

Add 2 packets of unflavored gelatin to 1/2 cup of water. Stir it to get as many of the lumps out as possible. Sit it aside to bloom.

Add Glaze Ingredients to Saucepan

Add 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup light corn syrup and 1/4 cup of water to a sauce pan. Stir until combined.

Cook Glaze

Put saucepan on medium heat. Bring to a boil. Add the bloomed gelatin, Stir until its dissolved. Then stir in 1/2 cup of sweetened condensed milk.

Complete the Glaze

Pour the mixture over 8 oz of white chocolate chips. Stir until all the chocolate has been melted. Then pour it through a fine strainer to get out any unmelted chocolate and gelatin.

Color the Glaze

Snapshot 17 (4-10-2017 8-11 PM).png

Separate out some small amounts of the glaze into separate bowls. You can color them any colors that you want. I colored mine 5 different colors.

Indigo blue using Americolor Navy Blue, into the largest amout of glaze

Black using Americolor Super Black

Teal by Wilton

Purple by Wilton

Pink by Wilton

Let Glaze Cool

Snapshot 28 (4-10-2017 9-14 PM).png

Put a candy thermometer into your largest bowl of glaze. Let it cool to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mix the Colors

Snapshot 19 (4-10-2017 8-12 PM).png

I swirled the black into the indigo blue. Don't stir it in just swirl it around.

Glaze the Cake

Place your cake on top of the bowl or vase. Pour the indigo and black mixture over the cake. Then drizzle the other colors randomly around the cake. Quickly use an offset spatula to lightly go over the top and sides of the cake. I did this in small swirls around the cake to mix some of the colors.

Let it set for 30 minutes. You can then cleanup any drips of glaze at the bottom of the cake.

The milkshake straw in the cake is to accommodate the Light saber cake topper. Its not needed for just the cake

Add Some Stars

Use a stiff bristled brush. Dip it in a little bit of white food color and flick it randomly around the cake. You can add as many or few as you want. Let the cake sit for 2-3 hours before adding any decorations.
