Glowing Christmas Star

I've never owned a Christmas Star that glows for my Christmas Tree before. Growing up I only had stars that were more akin to ornaments than a real glowing Christmas Star. That's why when I saw my typical glitter covered star, I decided to do something about it. But I'd have to figure out how big I wanted it to be and what it would be made out of.

I originally thought about making 3D Printed Star with a wooden outline, but quickly realized that it would be too heavy. So I settled on a simple 3D printed Star, with Christmas lights (Yellow) glued down within it. Both the star and the Christmas lights' chord would be white, to make the yellow LEDS be more visible. The Christmas lights would have to be battery powered since the Star would be on the very top of the tree. I immediately started shopping for my Christmas lights that met that criteria. Once I found some that did, I ordered them and got to work on Onshape, the software I use for 3D prints.

Supplies

All you’ll need for this project:

  1. Two Christmas Star Halves (3D Printed)
  2. White PLA Filament (100g)
  3. Lights
  4. Battery Powered (AA Batters) Christmas Lights (yellow lights/white chord)
  5. Here's the one I got: Link
  6. Adhesive
  7. Hot Glue Gun

3D Printed Star (1st Half)

  1. Make a new sketch on the front plane
  2. Create the star by using the line tool to draw a line between each corner 5 times
  3. Use the construction tool on the sides of the hexagon
  4. Then dimension the outside circle to be 230 millimeters

  1. Go to the top plane and create a new sketch (2)
  2. Make a dot below and above the center point
  3. Use the dimension tool so the space in between the top point and the center point is 22 millimeters
  4. Use it again so the space in between the bottom point and the top is 40 millimeters
  5. Making the space in between the top dot and the center point bigger will impact how deep the star will be

  1. Use the loft tool and select every piece of the star
  2. Then select the top point/vertex of Sketch 2

  1. Create a 3rd sketch on the face of loft 1
  2. Make another circumscribed hexagon
  3. Create another pentagram
  4. Dimension the outside circle and make it 5.6 inches

  1. Use the shell tool and select the face of loft 1
  2. Make sure the shell thickness is 0.04 inches

  1. Use the extrude tool and select the bottom triangle in between the 2 bottom triangle corners
  2. Then remove them to create a triangular hole

  1. Repeat all of the steps for the first half
  2. Change the shell thickness to 0.07 inches instead of 0.04

LED Assembly

  1. You'll start with thicker half (2nd) and grab the Hot glue gun
  2. Glue down the LEDs from the battery powered Christmas Lights
  3. Make sure to line them in the corners/crevices of the star as neatly as possible
  4. When around half of the LEDS are within the thicker half, glue the rest down in the thinner half
  5. Focus on placing at least a quarter of the LEDS within the center of the thinner half
  6. Make sure to glue down the wires/chords to keep them immobile and flat as much as possible

Final Assembly

  1. You'll have to prioritize sticking the wires down as much as possible
  2. Then glue the corners of the star halves together to the best of your ability
  3. Use some strength to forcible close it then glue down corner triangles
  4. Try to direct all excess wire to the gap/hole
  5. Place the star on your Christmas Tree
  6. Make sure to place the top "branch" and stick it inside the star hole if you can
  7. Lay the battery and excess chord wrapped around the top
