Ground Path Kit: a DIY Pathway System for Campus Hedgehogs
Human-designed environments often create small barriers for ground-dwelling animals such as hedgehogs. Inspired by observations on Koç University campus, the Ground Path Kit is a low-cost DIY system that helps small animals navigate height differences, gaps, and exposed pathways. This project transforms observation into action by providing simple modular pathway elements that anyone can build using recycled materials.
Supplies
- Cardboard
- Recycled paperboard
- Masking tape
- Glue
- Natural materials (optional)
Observe the Ground With Ground Level Viewer
Observe the environment from above ground level through ground level viewer. Look for obstacles, gaps, curbs, and surfaces that may be difficult for small animals to cross.
Identify Barriers
Height differences
Gaps
Unsafe surfaces
No clear routes
Build a Mini Ramp
Cut a piece of cardboard approximately 25 × 12 cm.
- Cut cardboard (approx. 25×12 cm).
- Fold along the lines to create a wedge.
- Tape the edges for strength.
Create Additional Modules
Combine multiple modules according to the needs of the site.
Place and Connect
Observe → Identify → Place → Connect
Test With Others
During testing, participants hesitated when:
- Choosing the correct size.
- Understanding placement context.
- Deciding how to connect multiple pieces.
