Having a crafty mom comes in handy when you need something handmade! This handmade baby burp cloth is a great project if you are expecting a baby or know someone who is. It makes a great baby shower gift, and you can choose any fabric design you like to personalize it!

Level: Beginner

  1. Sewing machine
  2. 100% cotton fabric
  3. Terry cloth or a hand towel
  4. Sewing pins or clips
  5. Matching thread
  6. Sewing scissors
  7. 23in. X 17in cutting mat
  8. Blunt chopstick
  9. Rotary cutter
  10. Ruler
  11. Iron

Cut Your Fabric

Lay your cotton fabric on the cutting mat. Using a ruler and rotary cutter, measure and cut a piece of fabric that is 9 in. × 18 in. Repeat this step with the terry cloth or hand towel so both pieces are the same size.

Pin and Sew the Fabric Together

Place the two pieces of fabric with their right sides facing each other. Pin or clip the edges together. Using your sewing machine, sew around all four sides about 1/4 inch from the edges, leaving a 3-inch opening along one of the short sides. This opening will allow you to turn the burp cloth right side out.

Trim the Corners and Edges

Carefully trim the fabric at the corners without cutting through the stitching. This helps reduce bulk and gives the corners a cleaner, sharper shape when you turn the fabric right side out.

Carefully pull the fabric through the 3-inch opening to turn the burp cloth right side out. Use a blunt chopstick to gently push out the corners. Then, carefully run the chopstick along the inside seams to help smooth out any bunched fabric. Be careful not to push too hard, as this could poke a hole through the fabric.

Iron and Topstitch the Burp Cloth

Step 5.jpeg

Iron the burp cloth to remove wrinkles and make the fabric lie flat. Fold the raw edges of the opening inward so they line up with the rest of the edge. Sew around the entire burp cloth about 1/8 inch from the edge, closing the opening as you sew.

Optional: For extra durability, sew a second row of stitching about 1/4 inch from the edge

Optional: Personalize Your Burp Cloth

Add a personal touch by embroidering a name, sewing on a monogram label, or adding a design such as an animal or shape. Choose a design you like to make the burp cloth special for your baby or as a handmade gift. For safety, make sure any decorations or labels are securely sewn on, since loose pieces can become choking hazards for babies. Avoid adding small pieces that could easily come loose.
