How to Use Flint & Steel

During the time that I teach bushcraft and survival, I come across many people who say they have used flint and steel.

This is not flint and steel. This is called a ferrocerium rod. These are man-made and designed to produce much higher temperatures for a greater chance of starting a fire.

A flint and steel set is exactly what the name suggests. It consists of a piece of high-carbon steel and a piece of flint with a sharp edge. Be careful, as flint can have a razor-sharp edge.
