How to DIY Repair F150 Tailgate Release Handle

The tailgate on my 2018 F150 refused to open. Try as I might the release lever would not work. The same thing happened on my previous truck and I was forced to replace the handle. Hopefully this was a simple issue and could be resolved quickly.

Always practice safety. If needed wear safety glasses, hearing protection, dust mask or respirator as well as heavy work gloves for sharp pieces or edges.

I had to climb inside the truck bed to access the back of the tailgate. A packing blanket was placed in the truck bed to kneel on. I tried to wedge a screwdriver into the corner of the tailgate to release the mechanism but it didn't work. A set of Star Hex Keys was used to remove the panel. Although it had several screws, they were not difficult to loosen and remove. Be careful to keep all the screws together.

I left the last screw in and the panel slid open enough to expose the release rod. It slid easily to the side releasing the tailgate and I lowered it down.

Once the tailgate was laid down the issue was apparent. There is a metal bracket attached to the release mechanism. The plastic clip holding the release rod had popped free. I was able to pop it easily back in place. I pulled the handle several times to insure it was working. That was all it took. An easy fix. Since I left one screw in the panel, alignment was easy. I slipped the panel back in place and reinserted the screws. I did take the opportunity to spray WD40 on the release mechanism on each end of the tail gate.
