How to Make a Crochet Chain

In this set of instructions, you will be learning how to make a crochet chain. The crochet chain is the starting step in most large scale crochet projects like scarves, blankets, or sweaters. Get comfortable and let's start crocheting!
Supplies
- Yarn or String
- Crochet Needle or Fingers
- Scissors
Tie a Loose Knot Around Your Finger or Crochet Needle.

Tie the Loose Knot a Second Time.
(This ensures that the loop will keep its integrity while completing the following steps.)
With Your Free Hand, Take the Long Side of the Yarn or String and Cross It Over Top of the Loop on Your Finger or Needle.

Grip the Yarn or String That Is Above Your Starting Loop.

- If using a needle: use your index finger to hold it in place.
- If using your fingers: use your thumb to hold it in place.
Grab the Bottom Loop With the Index Finger and Thumb of Your Free Hand and Slightly Lift It.

(Don’t be alarmed if the loop’s size increases, this will help.)
- If using your fingers: once you lift the yarn or string, go underneath your bottom loop with your thumb and grip the top loop in between your thumb and index finger. (bottom right photo)
Pull This Loop Above the Tip of Your Needle or Finger.

Repeat Steps 3-6 Until You Reach Your Desired Length.
Remove Yarn or String From Your Needle or Finger.
Cut Around 2 Inches Off of the Free End of Yarn or String.

Bring the Newly Cut End of Yarn or String Through the Loop That Was on Your Needle or Finger.

Pull on the Newly Cut String to Tighten and Seal the Chain.

Trim the Ends of the Chain
