How to Make a Quality Picture Frame
There are several steps into making a picture frame and you need several supplies to make the frame a quality one. If you measure it perfectly, everything will go together correctly.
Supplies
Wood
Safety Glasses
Router and Router Bit of your choice
Miter saw
Stain
Measurements
Wood Glue
Biscuit Jointer
Sandpaper
Measuring Tape
Get Your Measurements
Take exact measurements of the frame you want to make and write them down on a piece of paper.
Optional- Make Designs in Your Wood
If you want your frame to have designs, use a router and choose what kind of bit you like, then start routing the wood. You can use any type of bit you want to, but I used a 5/8 inch Straight Bit for behind the frame to hold the glass and picture in the frame. For the front of the frame, I used a 1/4 inch Double Roman Bit.
Cutting Your Wood
I recommend using a miter saw when cutting your picture frame pieces because it's better for bigger wood and you'll have straighter cuts than if you hand sawed it. It's also quicker than using a handsaw. Make sure you have exact measurements before cutting the pieces. You have to cut them at a 45 degree angle to make the frame fit perfectly. When using the miter saw keep in mind where your hand is at all times so you don't lose any body parts. To use the saw, there should be a handle with a trigger in it so when your ready to cut, squeeze the handle and pull down towards the wood the whole way through. Don't go fast or it will kick and it can cut your finger so go slowly and take your time.
Checking for Touchups
Make sure to put the pieces together after cutting it to make sure that it is properly measured. You can always take more wood off if one side is bigger than the other. Take some wood off with the miter saw till it is even on all sides.
Optional- Cutting Slots in the Wood for Biscuits
You have to buy the biscuits premade from a store. You will use a biscuit jointer to cut slots into the wood for the biscuits to go into. Then you will use your wood glue and glue the slots before you put the biscuits in There will only be one biscuit per corner.
Wait for the Glue to Dry
Wait for the glue to dry before doing anything. This would most likely take a few hours.
Use Sand Paper to Smoothen Your Frame
Use sandpapeer to make your frame nice and smotth to give it a good look and feel. The larger number grit the smoother the frame will be. If you use 100 grit sand paper the frame will be course, but if you use a 500 grit sand paper the frame will be smooth.
Stain the Frame
You can use any type of stain or color you want for the frame. I used a mahogany stain on oak wood to give it a newer look. Wood items will look better and newer with stain but there are tons of different types of stain so you can choose any for your project. Then your done, go enjoy your newly made picture frame
Finishing Product
If you used the same items I did then this should be your finished product. I hope you enjoyed.
