How to Set Up Vinyl Record for Listening

Playing vinyl is a classic and fun way to play your favorite music. Whether you're new to records or just need a refresher on what to do, this simple and straight to the point guide will walk you through the basic steps to get your record spinning smoothly and safely.

Supplies

  1. A record player (turntable)
  2. A vinyl record
  3. Speakers (either built in or external)
  4. Power source
  5. Record cleaning brush or cloth

Put Your Record Player on a Flat Surface

Make sure that it's leveled and stable to prevent skipping.

Plug in the Record Player

Connect it to a power outlet if needed.

Turn on the Record Player

Use the power switch or knob to start.

Lift the Dust Cover

Open it gently or remove it fully if needed.

Choose a Vinyl Record to Play

Place the Record on the Turntable

Center the hole of the record over the spindle.

Set the Speed (33 or 45 RPM)

Lift the Tonearm Carefully

Use the lever if your player has one, or lift gently by hand.

Move the Tonearm Over the Edge of the Record.

Lower the needle slowly onto the outer groove.
