How to Tame a Minecraft Wolf

Minecraft wolves provide in game companionship, safety, and protection. This guide will allow players to enjoy the features brought from wolves by learning how to tame one!

Supplies

  1. Minecraft game (Java or Bedrock)
  2. Sword or axe as a weapon
  3. Food and bones

Obtain Basic Supplies

Obtain a weapon and food to prepare for exploration.

Find Skeletons

Find a cave or wait till night fall for skeletons to spawn in the world.

Collect Bones

Defeat the skeletons and pick up the dropped bones.

Search for a Forest or Taiga Biome

Travel the world to find a biome where wolves will commonly spawn such as a forest or taiga biome.

Locate a Wolf

Watch for an untamed wolf walking in the biome.

Equip Bones

Bones should be visibly held in the player's hand.

Feed Bones to the Wolf

Use the bones on the wolf once it approaches.

Make Sure the Wolf Is Tamed

Watch for red hearts and a red collar to show if the wolf is tamed.

The wolf should now follow the player and sit when prompted.

Care for the Wolf

Feed the wolf when its tail is pointed down or injured.


Tips: If traveling a long distance check that the wolf is following still as they too can get lost if the player moves too far away. Also, make sure to always carry a cooked meat such as steak or chicken in case the wolf gets hungry. To quickly get more companions, feed two tamed wolves for a baby wolf!
