To make Google more accessible, you want to add extensions. Extensions can make it easier for you to read websites, get rid of pop up ads, and you can even have an extension for stuff to be read to you.

  1. In the top right corner of your screen, you should see 3 vertical dots. click on that.
  2. under the pop up, you should find a tab called "extensions". When you click on it, 2 options will pop up. "Manage Extensions" or "Visit Chrome Web Store". In this case, we will visit Chrome Web Store to add an extension.
  3. Extensions on the Chrome Web store should be safe. We will get back to this point soon.
  4. Under the extensions tab in the top left part of the website, there is a tab called accessibility. Click on that. I will choose the link "Read and Write for Chrome". You know its safe due to the ratings being over 3 stars with tons of reviews, a verified publisher, (has a checkmark next to the purple highlighted name, in this case, EVERWAY OPCO LIMITED.
  5. Click "Add to Chrome" to download it.
  6. You should get a pop up on what the extension can do to your computer. Be wary about those that can spy on your device.
  7. When downloading, on the upper right corner in between your name and a magnifying glass, Chrome will show you if you extension is downloading.
  8. When the extension is done, it should pop up next to a puzzle piece.

Profile Sync

You can add multiple accounts on one browser and have the same data on multiple devices. This is profile syncing.

  1. You go to your profile icon as shown in the first image. Mine says "school" because it's on a school account. You click on it.
  2. Go to add profile.
  3. Sign into your account.
  4. Then, you will get a pop up asking if you want to sync. Press sync.
  5. Chrome should open a new window so you can customize the other Chrome profile.

Checking If a Website Is Safe

Go to the switches on the left part of the search bar. Click on them. If you get a pop up that says this connection is secure with a padlock like I did, it's a secure website. If it lacks that padlock and says "connection is insecure", then you should avoid the website as it's likely sketchy. If you click further to the "connection is secure" text, you'll see where the certificate (proof that the website is secure) is from, if you care about that. :)

Another good indicator of a safe website would be seeing https:// before the web address. This is called "Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure" this means that any data you send to this website is encrypted, meaning it's only going to be seen between you and the servers that need to process your data instead of threat actors.

Light Mode/dark Mode

When you are on the Google website, you can change the colors and light/dark mode on your browser.

  1. If you go to the bottom right corner, a button called "Customize Chrome" will show up.
  2. You should be able to toggle between light and dark mode, and different color options.
