Instant Kanzashi Floral Hair Ornaments DIY

Would you or someone you love like to wear more flowers in your hair? Be brighter and sunnier? Be more decorated with almost no money, effort, or time? Of course you do!

Make floral hair ornaments in minutes, for pennies; for fun, school, or parties.

Supplies

Tools

  1. sharp hole-making tool (eg. awl, lancet, sharp yarn needle)
  2. pliers

If you're using a sharp yarn needle, you may want 2 pliers. The thing you are putting a hole into is pretty small, so I wouldn't recommend scissors.

Supplies

  1. artificial flowers
  2. hairpins
  3. bobby pins

I get all my flowers from dollar stores or Daiso/Oomomo. Unless each flower is really big, there should be a decent number of blossoms per stem, giving you a party's worth of goody bag fodder with just a few dollars. Hair accessories like bobby pins and hairpins (or clips, combs, hairbands, etc) can also be sourced from a dollar store but you might actually get better value for your money at the drug store.

Harvest Your Blooms

Except for the very smallest flowers (see pink), there will be a plastic cup at the base of each flower. Usefully and botanically speaking, anatomically this is a combination of a real flower's sepals and receptacle. Sometimes there is the option of just the flower or a small sprig of flowers (see blue). I have yet to encounter an artificial flower where the cup was not a simple friction fit vs somehow glued on to the stems. It should be nigh effortless to remove the blooms from the stems, but if you have your pliers to help if there are any issues.

Make a Hole

Make a hole in the stem part of the cup. As a general rule, I like to pierce all the way through the stem, so technically speaking I'm making 2 holes, but depending on how you want it to lie when it's worn 1 may be enough. You're using a sharp tool and pushing with reasonable force, so pliers to hold the stem and save your fingers is recommended. Alternatively, you could put the stem on a cutting board or other work surface and impale that way. The hole need only be big enough to accommodate your hair accessories.

In theory, I suppose you could dispense with the hole and hot glue flower to accessory, but I believe that it's just as quick, far far more secure, and more aesthetically pleasing than a big glop of glue.

Attach to Accessories

Thread your hairpin or bobby pin through the holes. Multiple flowers can be threaded onto the same pin for a fluffier ornament.

Wear!

Bonus Ornaments

You could also tie or wire the flowers to hair combs or hair clips, but that would probably double your build time. 🤣

Additionally, you could thread a bunch of flowers and/or leaves onto a thin cord or ribbon to make a crown, or sew a bunch of blooms to a headband.
