Introduction to Mechatronics

Mechatronics is the integration of mechanical engineering, electronics, and programming into a single system. It powers everything from robots to modern appliances—creating smart machines that can sense, process, and act automatically.

For designers, mechatronics is especially powerful:

  1. It enables the creation of responsive, automated products.
  2. Rapid prototyping with sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers helps test and refine ideas quickly.
  3. Real-time data can be used to make products more user-friendly and efficient.

In these first two weeks, we explored hands-on experiments to understand electronics, Arduino, and basic sensors. Each step begins with simple circuits and gradually introduces more advanced concepts.

Supplies

Core Components (used in most experiments):

  1. Breadboard
  2. Jumper wires
  3. 9V Battery / DC Power / USB power
  4. LEDs (single-color and RGB)
  5. Resistors (220Ω, 1KΩ, 1MΩ)
  6. Potentiometers
  7. Push buttons

Sensors and Modules:

  1. Arduino UNO (with USB Type-A cable)
  2. ESP32 (38-pin)
  3. Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SR04)
  4. PIR Motion Sensor
  5. MQ Gas Sensor
  6. DHT11 Temperature & Humidity Sensor
  7. Soil Moisture Sensor
  8. OLED Display (SSD1306, I²C)
  9. LCD Display (16x2 with I²C module)
  10. Neopixel strip

Actuators:

  1. Servo Motor (SG90 Microservo)
  2. Buzzer

Documentation for Week 1 - 2

We compiled all our work into a structured PDF that includes:

  1. Introduction to mechatronics
  2. Basics of electronics (power, resistors, breadboards, LEDs, potentiometers, transistors)
  3. Arduino introduction and coding basics
  4. 16+ experiments covering LEDs, Neopixels, Servo Motors, Ultrasonic Sensors, LCD/OLED displays, PIR & Gas Sensors, and ESP32 applications

Week 3 - Menmo (Smart Reminder for Alzheimer’s)

We applied all our Week 1 & 2 learnings to design Menmo – a smart reminder device for Alzheimer’s patients. The device combines ESP32, GPS, LCD, sensors, and a mobile app to provide daily reminders, geofencing safety alerts, real-time tracking, and emotional support messages. With a compact, elderly-friendly design featuring large Yes/No buttons, high-contrast fonts, and a calming color palette, Menmo ensures patient safety while reducing caregiver stress.
