JME1414 Design Project: Drying Rack for Brushes

Supplies
- Wooden boards
- Screws (at least 1/4in longer than board thickness)
- Hole saw bits (multiple sizes as desired)
- Cobalt drill bits: 3/32in & 11/32in
- Hinge kit
- Drill
Clamps
Optional:
- Wood stain & paint brush
Sandpaper
Make Wood Cuts
Use preferred saw (hand saw, table saw, etc) to make the following cuts:
- 10in x 6in (4 pieces)
- 6in x 6in (2 pieces)
Drill Holes With Hole Saw Bits Into Bottom Board
- Drill hole pairs with diameter: 3/4 in, 5/8in, 1/2in , 1/3in, and 1/4in
- Use pencil and ruler to map center for drill bit.
Screw Bottom and Sides Boards Together
- Use clamps to hold boards together prior to drilling
- Use 11/32in drill bit for pilot holes
- Install screws at least 1/4in from rims to prevent cracking
Install Hinges & Lid
- Measure and rule out location for hinges
- Use chisel and mallet to create 2 shallow grooves for hinges
- Station hinges with tape
- Drill 3/32in pilot holes for hinge screws
- Install screws and remove tape
Apply Finishes
- Sand down wood surface
- Burr box's rims and edges
- Paint 2-3 coats of water-based wood-stain
- Leave outdoors for 1 hour or until fully dried
Finished!
- If the brushes are dripping wet, maybe place a napkin/towel beneath to catch the water, like this.
