History:

A Japi, or sometimes spelled Jaapi, is a traditional hat that belongs to Assam, India. This 3D model is strictly a recreation of the hat and does not follow the exact traditional methods of creating this hat (encouraged to explore more beyond this introductory description). This traditional hat is typically woven from bamboo strips and tokou paat leaves. This combination of durable organic material makes the Japi weatherproof. Making the hat ideal for agricultural workers. The hat is estimated to have been created around the ancient (7th century) era of Assam, India. With the hats being used by farmers to withstand the weather. Later in the Middle Ages, the hat became very popular, and elaborate hats were a symbol of status and diplomacy. In the modern era, the Japi hat is a cultural symbol of Assam.

The Japi is authentically created in the Indian state of Assam, in the Kamrup district and the Jorhat district. Since 2024, this traditional hat has been protected by the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in India.
