Kevlar/Carbon/Fiberglass Layups


This tutorial will teach you to make lightweight layups from resin, hardener, and fiber. The applications for these layups are typically utilized in the aerospace and military sectors.
Supplies


You will need:
- A fiber roll; usually carbon fiber, kevlar or microfiber.
- Resin & Hardener. Any combination works but they all have varying purposes. Look for labels like "10X" or "20X". The 10X is usually resin and 20X is hardener.
Layout Your Roll

First, take several pieces of your fiber and lay them down. Cut out equal sized pieces of DIFFERENTLY ANGLED WEAVE (half should be straight, other half diagonal). You will need this many sheets per application:
- Basic layups (1-2)
- Impact-resistant/projectile resistant shields (5-15 kevlar sheets OR alternating/halfknit sheets for lighter applications)
- Drone frames (4-6 carbon sheets)
- Wallets and smaller accessories (2-3)
Kevlar is stronger as protection but less brittle and heavier than Carbon.
oh yeah and wear a respirator or your lungs will get all cut up from the dust. Learned this the hard way.
Mix Resin

Mix your resin and hardener in a cup/bucket or whatever medium you're using. There will be a ratio of pumps of hardener to resin on the packaging of each product.
Paint Resin

Then, slowly paint ontop of your top sheet. Aim for a cardstock-thin layer of it ontop of your first sheet.
Layering

When you place the next sheet of fiber ontop of the existing one, make sure to alternate between the horizontally cut and diagonally cut weaves for maximum strength in your layup.
Drying and Finish!

Wait until your piece finishes curing. Congrats! You've made a resin layup!
