Make Your Own DIY Crochet Camera Strap!
Crochet Camera Strap
In this project, I made a camera strap in order to match my outfit but also to be functional and durable. The strap will be crocheted using six different yarn colours and textures of yarn with the choice of combining them according to personal preference.
I chose a light and amusing palette of white, yellow, pink, light pink, and khaki to create a lively but harmonious appearance. The white, yellow, and pink yarns are made from milk cotton (available in 4-ply or 5-ply), which makes the strap feel smooth and comfortable to the skin.
To enhance the strength and prevent stretching over time, I used less elastic material like round yarn and soft linen as the outer structure in light pink and khaki. These materials provide additional support, so that the strap could support the weight of a camera during the long-term usage, without its form changing.
Supplies
To create this handcrafted camera strap, I used a mixture of materials that balance both visual appeal and durability.
Materials
1) Crochet yarn (with, yellow, pink, light pink and khaki)
-Milk cotton yarn (4-ply or 5-ply) to be soft and comfortable
-Round yarn and soft linen yarn to provide the added structure and less elasticity.
2) Fishing line (to inprove strenght)
3) Sewing thread (to hold and complete details)
4) Buttons (4 pieces)
Tools:
1) Crochet hooks (3.0 mm or 3.5 mm, depend on the yarn thickness)
2) Sewing needle (to assemble and sew parts)
3) Yarn needle (to tie in ends)
Abbreviations
- mr = magic ring
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ch = chain
Crochet the First Motif (R1)
Start by following the Round 1 (R1) pattern.
Begin with a magic ring.
Ch 3 (counts as first double crochet), 2 dc, ch 2,
(3 dc, ch 2) × 3 times, repeat.
-This will create a small square pattern, which can be seen as the foundation of the camera strap design.
Once you have completed the first motif, repeat Round 1 to create approximately 18 motifs. I combined different yarn colors to create a playful and bright appearance.
(can customize the color combination and number of motifs based on your personal style and preferred strap length)
Join the Motifs (R2)+(R3)
Then, start to joining the motifs together.
Option 1:
First, continue with Round 2 (R2):
(ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the first space,
(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) × 3 in the remaining spaces.
While crocheting Round 2, I joined each motif directly to the previous one as I worked. This makes it more efficient and creates a seamless connection between motifs.
Then continue Round 3 (R3):
3dc in each ch-2 sp around.
When you complete the final slip stitch, pull the yarn through and cut it.
The basic strap is now complete!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 2:
Crochet Round 1 and Round 2 of all the motifs first, and then sew them together later with a needle and thread. if you choose this method, you can skip Round 3.
(choose the method that you feel more comfortable with)
***When crocheting, you can hide the yarn ends in the stitches as you go. This helps keep the piece neat and reduces the sewing to be done aftherwards.
Shaping
Next, using soft linen yarn, make a round of single crochet (SC) stitches along the entire bottom strap.
Work 3 single crochet (3 SC) stitches into the same stitch over at each of the four corners. This creates a smooth curve at the corners, making the strap more flexible and it does not pull too tight when twisted.
This shaping step helps to provides additional structure and minimize excess elasticity, thus making the shoulder strap more flexible and secure in the final shape.
Create the Adjustable Strap
In this step, we will make the adjustable part of the camera strap. i added two buttons as adjustment points so that the strap could be worn in different lengths, either crossbody or around the neck.
I added a fishing line inside the strap to give it better strength and shape, providing additional support and helping it maintain a firmer, more structured form over time without affecting their appearance.
I used round yarn for this part as the non-elastic yarn.
Begin with ch 45 in round 1 (R1).
R2: ch, (44 sc, inc) x 2 times, repeat.
-At the end of the strap, crochet ch 5 to make a loop to hang the button (adjust the ch quantity depending on your button size).
***Crochet around the fishing line, allowing it enclosed inside the stitches rather than working it as a strand of yarn.
Final Assembly & Finishing Touches
Lastly, sew the adjustable strap to the camera strap.
Then sew the buttons at the appropriate positions (*Do not placing them at corners where the adjustable strap might fold when secured).
Recommended location: 0.5 cm and 9.5 cm above the sewing line.
If there are any leftover yarn tails, use a yarn needle to weave them in and hide them neatly, then trim off the excess ends.
Done!
Our camera strap is complete!
It can be used not only for a camera, but also for bags or other items, as long as they have a hanging ring or attachment loop.
Thank you for reading along. I hope you enjoyed making this peoject as much as i did! :D
