Micro Crochet Granny Square Earrings

These micro crochet granny square earrings are the perfect project for anyone looking to try micro crochet. You will need to know the basic stitches for crochet (slip stitches, single crochet and double crochet) and I would recommend practicing on a larger scale if you have never made a granny square before. It is made like a regular granny square just on a tiny scale! It may be a bit fiddly but once you’ve got the hang of it they are relatively easy and quick to work up.

I have included images of a larger granny square using the same stitch count to hopefully make it easier to understand as well as an image of the micro granny square at the end of each round.

abbreviations:

sc (single crochet)

dc (double crochet)

(This is using US terms)

  1. Make a slip knot in the first colour thread. Insert your hook into the loop and pull through to create a stitch.
  2. Chain 6 stitches
  3. Insert hook into the first chain (next to the slip knot) and make a slip stitch by pulling the thread through both loops, this creates a circle of stitches

Round 1:

  1. Chain 3 stitches (this will act as a dc)
  2. Make 2 dc into the centre of the circle (see above images)
  3. *Chain 3 then (dc 3 times) into the centre of the circle* repeat from *to* for another 2 times

You will now have 4 sets of “shells” with 4 spaces in between them

  1. To finish the round slip stitch into the 3rd stitch of the first chain 3
  2. Break the thread and pull through the loop on the hook. Pull to tighten.

Round 2 (second Colour)

Round 2:

  1. Attach the new colour thread into a corner space of the previous round
  2. Start the round by chaining 3 stitches
  3. Then 2 dc into the same stitch/space (see images above), chain 3 and then work 3 dc into the same stitch
  4. *Chain 1
  5. Now work 3 dc into the next space, chain 3 and work 3 dc into the same space*
  6. Repeat from *to* twice more

You should have created 8 “shells” and have 4 spaces.

  1. Finish the round the same as before by slip stitching into the last stitch of the first chain 3 and break the thread

Round 3 (third Colour)

Attach the third colour a stitch away from one of the corner spaces of the last round.

Round 3:

  1. sc into first stitch
  2. *At the corner work 2 sc into the space, chain 2, and work another 2 sc into the same space
  3. sc across the 3 dc from the previous round, work a sc into the 1 stitch gap between “shells”, sc across the next 3 dc from previous round (see images above)*
  4. Repeat from *to* until you reach beginning of the sc border.
  5. Finish the same as before by using a slip stitch and break the thread

Use a needle to weave in the ends.

Repeat the process to make a second square.
