Miyoo Mini Plus+ Wireless Charging Mod

I saw a video on YT on how to add a wireless charging receiver to a Sony PSP. I don't really want to do that to my PSP but it got me thinking if I could do the same to my Miyoo Mini Plus+.

Anyway here's my first Instructable so I apologise for the crudeness but here's what I did and how I did it. I hope you find it informative or inspiring.

Supplies

  1. Wireless Charging Receiver module. Purchased from AliExpress for $4 - $5. Doesn't matter what usb plug is on the end as we won't be using that.
  2. Sharp knife or hobby scalpel.
  3. Basic Soldering tools.
  4. I did use a dremel to remove stock from the battery backing plate. I think the guy in the YT video used nail clippers. Whatever works.
  5. About 20 cm's of wire. I salvaged some from an old USB cable.
  6. Drill and small drill bit. about 3-4mm .

Dissasemble Charging Receiver

  1. First step is to disassemble the wireless charging receiver. you can cut off the plug as we won't be using that.
  2. then using a sharp knife or scalpel you need to seperate the layers of plastic without damaging the circuit and coil inside. Go slow and pay attention to where your cutting. If you look in the third picture you can see I cut along the black ribbon cable until I reached the circuit board. It doesn't matter if you cut the ribbon cable as we will be throwing that away.

Hopefully if you have succeeded you should have ended up with the coil attached to the circuit as in the picture above. You can cheat and only remove the plastic from one side. Then just cut the excess off from around the circuit and coil. Now using the soldering iron you can seperate the coil from the circuit board Where I've marked in photo 2.

Prepare Case for Coil Wires

  1. To prepare the case you will need to unscrew the six screws holding it together, after you've unplugged and removed the battery from the battery compartment. Seperate the back cover by gently pulling it off.
  2. Then you will need to drill a small hole in the top corner of the battery compartment for the coil wires to go through. Look at photos for reference.

Solder Coil Wires

  1. Next step is to measure how much wire you will need and cut and solder wires to coil. Orientation doesn't really matter for the coil.
  2. Now feed those wires through the hole you drilled, then solder them to the 2 contacts on the circuit board that you removed the coil from. Again orientation doesn't matter for the coil.

Connect USB Input to Charging Circuit

  1. Now to connect the circuit board to the USB charger input. Orientation for this DOES matter so pay attention to my photos.
  2. You will need to measure and solder a positive and a negative wire where the ribbon cable is attached to the charging receiver circuit board.
  3. You can either remove the ribbon cable from the circuit board and solder your wires directly to the circuit board, or just do what I did and scrape some of the insulation off the ribbon cable and solder the wires directly to that instead. Look at the second photo and follow where each wire goes.
  4. I think from memory the white wire was the negative lead. I soldered it to the case lug of the USB plug.
  5. Then I scraped some of the insulation off the track and soldered the positive lead to that as I tried to solder it directly to the plug contact but didn't have much luck with that. Again. Look at the photo's for reference.

Test

  1. If your happy with that, it's time to test it.
  2. Secure the circuit board in roughly the same position I have mine. Then replace the back cover.
  3. I wouldn't screw it back together just yet. But when you replace it make sure the wires are not in the way of the 4 buttons on the back as it will stop the back shoulder buttons from working.
  4. Replace the battery and let the coil dangle onto a charging pad and see if it starts charging. (Which it should if everything is correct.)
  5. If it works as it should then you can put the 6 screws back in. Remember to watch the position of the wires in regards to the 4 buttons.

Battery Cover

  1. Last step is to remove some of the plastic from inside the battery cover. I used a Dremel for this with a sanding wheel. But whatever works for you.
  2. You don't need to remove all of it as you can see in my photo. Just start from the center and work your way out measuring it against the coil for reference as you go. The coil should fit snugly in there when you're finished.
  3. If you skip this step then the battery cover will bulge when it is placed over the battery and coil.


If you look at the coil on one side there is yellow paper that you can remove and possibly stick the coil to the battery to stop it from moving. I didn't do this, just in case. Because the wire for it goes through the case it would make it difficult to remove in the future.

A better option would be to stick the coil to the inside of the battery cover. and connect it through the case using a connector, but there isn't much room for that sort of thing, so I just left it like this for now.

Final Thoughts

I hope you found this informative. Maybe helpful, if you are thinking of doing the same thing to your MMP+.

I'm not saying what I have done is the correct way of doing it. And it's DEFINITELY not professional. It's just the way I did mine using the YT video I found as reference. It seems to work fine and I'm happy with it for now.
