Rocking chairs are beloved by many; they are fun to sit on and help reduce stress. But we have noticed that a lot of rocking chair designs are similar; they’re all simple and old-fashioned. So, for our entry, we decided to design and print a modern rocking chair that’s comfortable and looks good.

Supplies

  1. Autodesk Inventor
  2. 3D Printer
  3. Filament for the 3D Printer

Sketch the Design

Firstly, you have to sketch the side profile of the design for the rocking chair, which includes sketching the:

  1. The Rocking Base (Keeping the arc of the rocking base kind of flat is recommended)
  2. The Chair (Should be tilted so the user can rock the chair)
  3. The Armrest

Extrude and Cut

Next, you have to extrude and cut the design to your preferred width.

For example, this is how much we extruded and cut our design:

  1. The Chair: Extruded 3.5 ft
  2. The Armrest: Extruded 4.5 ft, Cut 3 ft
  3. The Rocking Base: Extruded 3 ft, Cut 2.25 ft

Add Cushions

A chair needs to be comfortable, so we decided to add cushions to the chair. Sketch a rectangle where you would prefer the cushion to be, maybe on the armrest or on the back, and extrude it thinly and fillet it so that it looks like a cushion.

Print the Design

The last step is to print your design using a 3D printer, or if you don’t have a printer, you can request a manufacturer to print it for you
