Modular Hangboard Prototype for Climbing
The Hangboard is a tool used by climbers to build finger strength by hanging from a board with various-sized grips and holds. Most hangboards are set, and you can't change the hold positions or the holds themselves around.
I made this cardboard prototype, which I cannot actually use for training, but I will recreate the same thing out of wood in the future. I decided to create this modular hangboard in my Engineering Class with Ms. Berbawy, so I can easily switch out the holds and place them wherever I want, simply by sliding them on and off. I'm a climber and would like to have something like this in my house.
I got some inspo and ideas from this Reddit post by u/Old_Lingonberry_5598.
Supplies
Materials:
- cardboard
- foam blocks
- hot glue sticks
Tools:
- box cutter
- hot glue gun
- ruler
- pencil
Software:
- Onshape
The Design
I used OnShape to make a 3D model of the design with all of the measurements. The hangboard is 45 cm by 34 cm.
Cardboard
I used cardboard from a scrap box and cut out the 2d version of the shapes with a box cutter, so that I could fold them into 3D.
Creating Shapes With Cardboard
I took all of the flat shapes that I cut out of the cardboard, folded them, and hot-glued the seams to make the 3D shapes.
Assembling
Once I have all of the individual 3D parts, I glued the 3-channel pieces to the backboard (the 2 outer edges and the middle). Leave room for the channel strips in between, so they have room to slide in and out. After I also cut both of the channel strips in half, so that there could be one hold on each.
Creating the Holds
I used 4 foam blocks, which I shaped with a cardboard cutter to be the shape of a climbing hold, which I then hot-glued to the Channel strips that were evenly spaced out, and hot glue them to the channel strips.
Modular Hangboard
You have now created the modular hangboard Prototype!
You can now use it as a model to create a real hangboard you can actually hang from by using wood instead of cardboard and attaching wooden/real holds!
My plan is to make my wooden version, using some thick Baltic Birch plywood.
I would cut the channels at a 45-degree angle and screw in the channel pieces to the backboard. For the holds, you can screw in regular climbing holds into the channel strips, or make custom wooden holds.
