Blue Mosaic Mirror Coaster

PXL_20250804_161331848.jpg

Hello all,

Mosaic Mirror is similar to Lippan Art, but difference between them is Mosaic art is all about arranging small pieces of mirror or broken tiles to create patterns; whereas lippan art is about creating colourful mandala pattern using clay or mud and place tiny mirrors. Mosaic art we place the mirrors/tiles first and cover it with mud(traditional), but instead i have added our pastel blues mixture to cover.

So we have two circles and two square, first visualize our design on paper. so we get an approx idea about turn out. when i was sketching, i realized will layout four designs, and will pick one of each shape and do it. After sketching changed my mind and made it each as unique one.

Circle 1 Design

Using compass, draw circle about 1cm radius, 2cm & 3.5 cm. Give 8 sectors either use protractor to angle it or measure and draw using middle point. Starting from middle, place 10 mm round mirror, followed by 7mm triangle around the circle, fits about 8 pieces of it.

Flower resembling mirror placement takes about 2cm surface area and moon is 2cm in length so placed alternately in perimeter circles

Circle 2 Part 1

Find the midpoint, divide the circle by 8 segments, 1cm circle from mid point, 3cm circle from mid point. crescent will be rotated and placed in between segments at even distance. first set of petals from mid point, in 8 lines.

Circle 2 Part 2

Now the second set of petal are placed zig zag to the first one. Glue the moon, still distance moon seems more spacious, so added a 7mm diamond in the 8 lines.

Square 1

This is my favorite pattern, Draw diagonal lines, mark 20mm in that and draw lines diagonally.. it will be symmetrical. each forms a diamond shape, place 7mm diamond in four direction, forming a mini flower; repeat for all. In four corner paste 7mm circle as it has bit of empty space.

Square 2

Here comes non-designed, on moment idea of random placements of mirrors. choosen sqaure of 10 mm and diamond of 7mm. Applied glue on random places and started placing sqaure mirror first, after that placed diamond mirrors

Let It Dry and Admire

Generally in traditional way fine mud/clay will be used to fill the gaps, we are using modern way by using wall putty/ white cement in which glue is poured and stirred well. Also point to be noted, why glue is main mixing agent inside of water, coz it is the bonding agent. After drying it doesn't leave any cracks or it doesn't fall off. It holds everything together.

when 100g of putty is mixed with 30g of glue

Spray water like in few drops, just to give the binding effect of glue & putty

Also the final texture should be like image 3, it should be like thick paste consistency

Colours

PXL_20250804_071359617.jpg
PXL_20250804_073229223.jpg

Only on thick paste , when acrylic colour is poured and mixed, the texture will loosen up a bit. I have divided the portion into two and used it equally for preparing blue and Aqua mixture

Let's Colour the Circle

Since there are two colours, in design 1, have used aqua in middle and blue in outer circle, swipe it spatula, so it was quite thick layer on the mirrors too. For the second one, given both colours in two halves and wiped with price tag, it was smooth. so less sticking on the mirror parts

Square Fill

PXL_20250804_080353307.jpg
PXL_20250804_082031862.jpg

Gave diagonal filling for the square 1, gave clean swipe. likewise for random pattern square. Let it dry for 2-3 hours

Clean Up

PXL_20250804_150123854.MP.jpg
PXL_20250804_151429539.jpg

As mentioned in step 11, there was thick buildup on mirrors of design 1, so used knife to first scratch off and used damp cloth to clean the leftover debris, on the other hand design 2 was easy cleanup with damp cloth itself as it was not having high buildup on it. Swipe with price tag or stiff material helps in reducing in build up on the mirror leaving a room for easy clean. Wipe off for both sqaures as well

Final Pic

Finally its done, After drying it has become pastel blue instead of blue. loving it though.. mesmorizing output. Do try this easy craft and let me know if you had tried this.
