Multicolored Stellated Truncated Icosahedron
The "Multicolored Stellated Truncated Icosahedron" is an exploration of geometric complexity and artisanal precision, transforming two-dimensional paper into a striking, high-impact three-dimensional structure.
Supplies
Twelve sheets of colored paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink) or cardstock, hobby knife (X-Acto knife), ruler, pencil.
Materials and Preparation
Before we start folding, we need to make sure all our materials are ready and cut with absolute precision. In modular origami, a single millimeter of difference can prevent the final structure from fitting together properly, so take your time with this step.
What you will need:
12 sheets of paper or lightweight cardstock: I recommend using 6 vibrant colors (2 sheets of each: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink) to achieve the multicolored effect.
Craft knife (X-Acto type) or scissors.
Metal ruler and pencil: For measuring and marking the cutting guides.
Cutting the Base Modules
To create the points of our star, we need to divide our sheets into smaller, perfectly symmetrical pieces.
Take your colored sheets and, using the ruler and pencil, mark grids of squares measuring exactly 7cm X 7cm
Using a safe cutting surface, use the craft knife along with the metal ruler to make clean, straight cuts.
Organize your cut pieces by color. By the end, you should have a neat pile of modules ready for the folding phase.
Folding the Modules
With all of our 7 x 7 cm squares cut, it's time to start shaping them. In this step, we will create the individual modules that will make up our geometric structure. Folding requires precision: make sure to crease each fold very firmly with your fingertips or the edge of your ruler so the pieces fit together perfectly later.
Follow the visual sequence: Carefully observe the images in this step to replicate each fold on your paper squares.
Fold with precision: Fold each square following the logical steps of modular origami (marking the midlines, folding the corners inward, and securing the tabs that will act as connectors).
Repeat the process: You will need to repeat this exact folding pattern for every single one of your colored papers until all of your modules are ready.
