New Type of Rocket Engines

IMG_0808.jpg

For about a year, I have been wondering if homemade potassium nitrate (KNO3) rockets would go higher than store bought C6-5 rocket engines. I started getting more and more interested in them and wanted to buy a model engine, but was shocked at how expensive store bought engines were. Later, I decided that I could build my own. I started with sugar rockets, then moved to Gunpowder based rockets. Later I found that by mixing the fuels you get a more powerful and hotter chrge.

Supplies

  1. Empty rocket engine casing
  2. KNO3/Stump Remover
  3. Sugar
  4. Charcoal
  5. Sulfur
  6. Water
  7. Wooden Dowel with the same diameter as the rocket engine casing
  8. Bentonite Clay
  9. Wick
  10. Small Allen wrench
  11. Lighter
  12. Funnel

SAFETY

  2. On all of these steps use safety.
  3. Wear a mask and eyeglasses.
  4. Follow government regulations.
  5. Only put about 10 or less grams of fuel in a rocket.
  6. Wear gloves.

Make the Sugar Rocket Fuel

  1. Measure out 65 grams of KNO3 and 35 grams of powdered sugar and mix them together for about 5 minutes
  2. Store in a airtight container away from electronics.

Make Gunpowder

  1. Measure out 75 grams of KNO3, 13 grams of crushed charcoal, and 12 grams of sulfur. Mix them together for about 5 minutes.
  2. Store in a airtight container away from electronics.

Mix the Two Together

  1. Mix all the gunpowder with the sugar rocket fuel.

Build the Rocket

  1. Get the rocket engine casing and set it on a flat surface OUTSIDE.
  2. Add the blended bentonite clay to the bottom of the engine and mash down with the wooden dowel until there is about 3/8 of an inch of clay in the engine casing.
  3. Add about a teaspoon of fuel to the engine casing with the funnel and a spoon, then add a drop of water. Do this until you are about 3/8 of an inch from the top of the engine casing.
  4. Fill the rest of the the engine casing with clay.
  5. Mash down hard.
  6. use a small Allen Wrench about 1/5 of an inch wide to make a hole through the clay on one side. Keep pressing until the wrench is almost through the whole engine.

Lighting It

  1. Add a fuse in the air chamber created by the wrench.
  2. Place the engine OUTSIDE away from flammable materials under a large rock.
  3. Light the wick and run.
  4. Watch and enjoy:)
